About this project

The Kentucky Derby is one of the most heavily covered events in horse racing, but rare is the news outlet that treats it as one of the greatest storytelling platforms in American sports.

That's how Kentucky Confidential will cover the 2011 Kentucky Derby.

We are a group of accomplished writers, photographers, and an award-winning filmmaker creating an ambitious multimedia publication dedicated to the country's signature horse race. Kentucky Confidential is designed to immerse its followers in the rich, carnivalesque atmosphere, past and present, that makes the Kentucky Derby so unique.

We will publish daily for two weeks, beginning April 26 and ending May 9, delivering the Derby scene through original reportage, surprising photographs, and guerilla video, telling the story of the Kentucky Derby with all the tools of classic sportswriting and digital media.

What you can expect to see on Kentucky Confidential:

  • True (and not-necessarily true) stories from the backstretch

  • Tall tales and little-known historical marvels from the Derby's rich past

  • Kinky stats and contrarian handicapping

  • Straight-shooting, expert contender profiles and news

  • Lures and snares of Louisville nightlife and bourbon culture

  • Video from one of the underground's best filmmakers

The Kentucky Confidential team includes:

  • Jessica Chapel (Breeders' Cup 360)

  • Pete Denk (Freelance, formerly Thoroughbred Times)

  • Jeff Krulik (Heavy Metal Parking Lot)

  • Claire Novak (ESPN, Blood-Horse)

  • Brendan O'Meara (Author of the forthcoming "Six Weeks in Saratoga")

  • John Scheinman (Red Smith Award winner, formerly Washington Post)

  • Scott Serio (Eclipse Sportswire)

  • Anonymous (A legendary sportswriter working undercover)

All of the money we raise will go toward producing Kentucky Confidential.

If you look to the right, you'll see the rewards we're giving backers of the project to say thanks for your generous support. Backers who pledge a minimum of $50 will receive a DVD produced by Jeff Krulik including his Derby diary videos and additional footage. Backers who pledge a minimum of $250 will receive a handsome, full-color, softbound edition of Kentucky Confidential featuring our best photos and stories from the 2011 Derby.

We thank you in advance for your contribution! By supporting Kentucky Confidential, you directly contribute to the creation of the stories we'll bring you from Churchill Downs, stories that you won't get anywhere else.
