THREE HIGHWAYS TO DENALI
Project by Kris Payne
I am embarking on a very large adventure: I'm leaving New York and am Alaska bound and documenting the whole damn thing on my favorite camera, the Hasselblad 500 c/m. My current plan is to drive 3 world famous highways from beginning to end to get there: Route 66, The Pacific Coast Highway, The Alaska Highway. A trip totalling around 6500 miles of driving, sometimes through remote and empty lands, sometimes through the biggest cities in North America. A very large and diverse landscape of mountains, valleys, deserts, tundra, rain forests, ocean views, road side camping, backcountry hiking and more awaits.
The drive begins a little after my lease expires in Brooklyn. Driving north to Canada and then west to Chicago before heading southwest on mainly 55 mph backroads following old alignments of Route 66. San Diego to Vancouver along the gorgeous Pacific Coast Highway. Vancouver to Fairbanks along the wild Alaska Highway and then arriving in a village in Alaska to begin an 8 week artist residency at the foot of Denali, the highest point on the North American Continent.
Up to this point, all of my travel has been paid for by either family vacations, hard work and savings, employers or credit cards. I've been very lucky to get to travel for work and for pleasure and I've seen my share of amazing places. This trip is a lot different from all previous trips. When I travel for work, everything is taken care of by a producer and the client, this time it all rests on me. The planning, and the paying.
Money I raise from this kickstarter is going to supplement the savings I've already started. A requirement for driving the Alaska Highway is to have enough funds on hand to cover the entire expense of the 1488 mile drive; towing a broken down car due to overheating can be quite costly when you have to get a tow truck from 600 miles away.
Thanks for taking the time to look at the project and I hope you donate :-). Visit http://krispayne.net and http://hypostyle.net to check out my work.
Access to a password protected blog with varying degrees of updates (dependent upon internet access, which could be anywhere from seldom to abundant.)
Personalized postcards from spots all over North America, delivered to your mailbox in addition to blog access
In addition to the blog, an envelope containing a 5 small prints from the trip.
In addition to the blog, a signed, loose, open edition 20x20 print from the trip
This is a tricky one: A personal portrait of you while I'm on the road. You must live, or be able to travel to a destination no more than 200 miles off of my course. Of course, access to the blog.
In addition to the blog and postcards, a signed, framed and matted, 1 of 5 20x20 photograph from the trip.
I hate third person bios. It's not like someone else is writing it. I'm writing it. I like making photos of things that everyone is able to see, but probably won't make the time in their life to do so. The world is a living creature (without getting mystical) and one day, it won't be the same (without getting evangelical). These are the people, places and things I want you to see.
I was born and raised in Oklahoma and was fortunate enough to be born into a family that values travel, open thought and finding your own way.
I live and work worldwide.
