A smart tale about a young woman's stormy life, legendary legs and mother's illness with illustrations by Philly artist Monique Ligons
Here at Kidnap Yourself headquarters, Kate McCabe has worked on every art project imaginable and supported other artists coming to the desert to complete their own masterpieces. Making books has been a long term goal and we have self-published 4 so far! First was the limited edition photo art book "The Bra Project" and next came Kate's foray into sketchbook/comic/diaries with the series "Mojave Weather Diaries". Mojave Weather Diaries is a humble and hilarious record of life in Joshua Tree and has been a huge success with each of the 3 in the series going into second printings. But we want to make More!
Kate has STORIES to tell, ones that have an existing audience and ones that can find an even larger audience. The Truth about Tornados is our first venture into fiction publishing, but it is not our last as Kate can not stop writing even if she tried. For this story she teamed up with kick ass Philadelphia artist Monique Ligons to do original illustrations to accompany the tale. The inspiration for the book format comes from chapbook collaborations written by Charles Bukowski with drawings from R. Crumb, yet, ours undoubtedly is a real female point of view!
The short story is about a young woman who can only deal with the burden of her stormy life and mother's illness by scheming her next escape. She gets trapped on an island, wills her legs to a no-good lawyer and has a hard time managing the escapist routines of her closest friends.
We've done a lot of projects and have NEVER before asked for help, but it's time to ask for help to get this project off the ground. The story is written, the illustrations are almost complete, layout is at 80%, the printer is being researched and now we need to ask for donations to make sure it's really done right. Kate has a long history of making things happen and her work ethic knows no bounds. Fund raising for this little book will go to paying the artist, final layout, ISBN registration, printing and web promotion.
Your donation and support will go towards the creation of a special book that in our eyes is an object of love, a unique and rare opportunity to have a printed forever friend in your hands.
THANKS for considering our project.

Here is a link to Monique's site, her artwork is incredible. She was a natural fit for this collaboration because she really was moved by the story and connected with it right away. I met her at University of the Arts when we both studied animation over 15 years ago. Please check out her art!

Both plural spellings are totally 100% correct. The title for this is taken from a short animation by the magnificent Doug Hudson. He's from Kansas and he spelled it "Tornados" so I'm trying to be true to the inspiration.
