Update #31: Insiders Group Survey

Posted on May 20

I wanted to send out a quick update on the Insiders Group. All of the backers that chose a pledge level that included the Insider Group will be receiving a survey soon. The survey will consist of several statements concerning the closed play testing involved in the upcoming Dark Horse expansion. Once the survey has been filled out, with all statements agreed upon, the participants will receive an invite to the Insiders Group site and receive play testing packets.

Once a majority of the Insiders Group has responded to the survey and received their packet the group will start. I estimate that the group will be active for two to three months. At that point the Kickstarter campaign for the expansion will be fired off.

Update #30: Dark Horse Expansion

Posted on April 26

It is hard to believe two months have passed since the last update, but time has really flown by. On the positive side of things, a majority of the recent prototype testing for the expansion has been fairly smooth. With that being said, we are moving to the next stage, i.e., "alpha" testing.

I have heard designers describing various phases of their project in different ways. I am a software engineer by trade, so I lean towards a more standard software/application approach to my design process and testing. So in that regard, my game designs have a conceptual stage where the general setting and basic game mechanics are decided upon. If that seems to gel, and I have the time, I will take the design to the "prototype" stage where play test materials are created and I begin documenting my mechanics more thoroughly. On a side note, I lean towards heavy documentation as I have many different designs and ideas in various stages of development. Most of my designs have full outlines, and mechanic break downs where I analyze what is going on in each design.

The final steps in the prototype stage is the first clunky play tests and basic refinement of the mechanics. When the smoke clears, and the game has been revised, it is usually a green light for the alpha stage of the project. I wont bore you with the other stages until we get there, but I did want you to know that the expansion is now in the alpha stage. My intentions are to involve the Insiders Group participants at this stage and together we will carry the design to the final "beta" stage. On that note, I just recently fired off some play test materials to a few select people for some outside feedback. Once I am comfortable with how the prototype mechanics are received then I will fire off play test packets to everyone involved in the Insiders Group.

Finally, I would like to offer you a sneak peek at some prototype hero/villain cards. Players will be able to hire these characters based upon their overall reputation in the game. The expansion adds a Reputation track and certain actions within the game will increase or decrease your reputation. You will notice that Bat Masterson has a white hat icon beside his image. This represents players needing to have a +3 reputation whereas Jesse James requires you to have a -6 reputation. Another interesting twist in the game is that players having a high or low reputation will suffer different consequences.

Lawmen add various interesting abilities that will help players, while Outlaws will be able to negatively affect opponents and also rob from various locations in the game, e.g., Train, Bank, Stagecoach, and Wagon Train. There is also a third type of neutral character that does not require a player to have any sort of reputation status.

You will notice that both character cards below have symbols at the bottom of the card. Thematically, the gun symbol represents how fast the character is with a gun and the cross-hairs shows how accurate the character is. The star-burst icon represent how tough a character is and improves their chances in surviving a gun fight. The combat system is simple, straight forward, and will not bog the game down.

Some players may be concerned that the characters will drastically change the play style of Dark Horse. In advance, I want to reassure everyone that the expansion additions allow players to control the pace of what is going on. If one group wants to lean towards Outlaws and gun fights they can do that. Other groups may decide to exclude Outlaws all together, thereby removing gun fights. It is safe to say that there will be various options and mechanics that players can experiment with in the expansion.

Things are starting to ramp up so the updates will be more frequent from this point forward. We have full intentions on firing up the Kickstarter campaign for the expansion sometime this Summer after the Insiders Group has finished.

Update #28: Video Tutorial & SaltCON

Posted on February 3

I just finished up both the FAQ/Errata document and a full length video tutorial for the game. Please refer to the links below to access both. I will be posting these links to BoardGameGeek as well. If you are familiar with the game, and have time to check out the video, I was wondering if you could do me a favor? Please let me know if there are any portions in the video that reveal you had previously been playing a portion of the game differently. This will give me a chance to review the section of the rule book that deals with that area.

I also wanted to give everyone a heads up that I will be at SaltCON on February 17-18. I am looking forward to meeting with people in the area and getting Dark Horse to the table. If you will be attending SaltCON do not forget to bring your "Property of Dark Horse County" token with you. There could be a little surprise in it for you? :-)

For us that cannot attend to personally hand in the Property of Dark Horse token, can we mail it or something to redeem? Or, will there be other opportunities to use this token?

Scott - I have edited the update and included a link for a FAQ/Errata sheet without the background. :-)

Joel - Their will be other opportunities to pick up the various promos that I create for conventions. I am not sure how many conventions I can hit this year but I will definitely be at BGG Con in November. I will offer opportunities for fans to pickup promos by sending me a self addressed stamped envelope but this will need to be moderated as promos will be limited. I will always announce special offers to Kickstarter backers first.

Update #27: Dark Horse is on its way...

Posted on January 15

SHIPPING STATUS
Wow, what a crazy and exhausting week it has been. I really underestimated how long it was going to take to ship out 200 boxes. Put it this way... each box ended up taking roughly 10 minutes prep/assembly/ship time. I took a few days off Mon/Tue from work but I just couldnt crank out everything on those two days, especially since the shipment did not come until Monday afternoon. However, I am relieved to say that all of the Kickstarter packages have been sent off, except for some of the Caricature rewards. If you have not received a confirmation from USPS please contact me at knightworks@gmail.com to verify the status of your package. (Note: Most pre-orders are shipped as well and I am finishing the final boxes today.)

LAUNCH PARTY
The launch party went off without a hitch last night and I appreciate everyone that stopped down. There were lots of smiles, handshakes, hugs, and Dark Horse being played. There will be another game night for Dark Horse this coming Saturday at Dragons & Dragoons from 3pm until 9pm. Directions and contact information are below. If you did not get a chance to pick up your game, and cannot make next Saturday, please contact me at the email address above.

ERRATA
One of my previous play testers, "Thanks Craig!", noticed that a small clarification was missed in the rule book. It is irritating that this minor detail got missed, and I am kicking myself, but unfortunately rule book errata is a necessary evil. I apologize that this was overlooked.

"Players can never have more than one Special Role in the game, i.e., Mayor, Sheriff, Outlaw, etc. This is noted on the back of the Outlaw expansion card in reference to that role, however did not get added into the rule book. For example, if a player had the Sheriff role and took the Mayor action, then they gain the Mayor role/token, and lose the Sheriff role/token."

QUESTIONS/FEEDBACK
As always, please feel free to contact me for rule questions/clarifications and any comments or feedback you have. I am here to help you out and no question is too minor. Please use this address for future contacts: knightworks@gmail.com. On a side note, I was crazy to think I would have time to fire off that tutorial video but I will work on it this week.

Got my copies. The pre-punched and bagged bits thing is absolutely surreal. I am kind of curious to know why. Can you share?

    2. Kw_logo.thumb
      Knight Works on January 18

Quite a few backers and play testers have asked me if I punched and bagged everything. I think I would still be working on the prepping the games if that were the case, haha. :-)

I wanted to do something special for this game as it was my first professionally printed release. I paid a little bit extra to have the manufacturer bag the wooden pieces and punch out the tokens into separate bags. But, because I am dealing directly with the manufacturer there is no middle man involved in the transaction which lowers the cost some what.

The game would have easily been $60 or over if I was not dealing directly with the manufacturer. However, there is positive and negative sides to all things.
