About this project

Hello lovely Kickstarter visitors! I already know you're lovely because you're on Kickstarter and, well, that means you believe in dreams, possibility, and maybe even unicorns? In other words, you're exactly the kind of person I want to be friends with--so come hang out with me @kirstinbutler on Twitter no matter what.

So right, why I'm here: I'm starting a social enterprise at the domain alittlegood.com/.org that will launch on January 1, 2010. While I have long-term plans to professionalize the whole shebang, I want to grow it organically at first. Which means I'll be designing the site (even though I'm not a professional designer), writing the content (even though I'm not a professional writer), and marketing the sh*t out of it (even though I'm certainly not a professionalmarketer) myself.

I am, however, a professional generalist, and I'll be pouring in tons of sweat equity--so A Little Good's at least got that going for it. This will be a true experiment in bootstrapping, microgiving, social media marketing, and lots of other contemporary blogging buzzwords. Hopefully it'll even be hip enough to even get some earned media along the way!

The money I raise here will go toward hosting the site and newsletter subscriptions; getting me access to conferences and meetups where I can network, meet potential investors, and learn from people who know what they're doing; and keeping me running on ramen. Basically phase one. Anything I raise above and beyond this amount (wow, just even imagining that makes my heart all aflutter) will go toward my plans for phase two, which include hiring actual professionals to help with things like ad sales, design, application development, etc.

And if you pledge toward my project you'll be along for the ride--which means access to my design mockups, business plans, project management files, and generalized anxieties as I create this thing.

I hope to show the world that a little good can go a long way.

VIDEO BLOOPERS. That's right! I plan to make silly little videos wherein I talk about a specific aspect of the research I've done for the project. A caveat that my research tends to be wide-ranging, so it may not initially be clear why, say, an article about buffalo herding is relevant to A Little Good. But I'll try to connect the dots.

LISTING ON THE SITE AS A "GOOD BACKER."* Just like those pages from a company's annual report or a playbill that go on and on with donors, only here your name can link to anything you like and I promise to make it look pretty.

LISTING ON THE SITE AS A "BETTER BACKER."* See above description, only with a slightly more enthusiastic modifier.

LISTING ON THE SITE AS A "BEST BACKER."* Ibid, but with the superlative modifier attached. It's like the summa cum laude of donations.

First of all, it's crazy that you're even thinking about giving this much. Wow. I mean, just, wow. So in addition to a listing on the site as like, the Phi Beta Kappa of backers (we'll have to come up with a better term), I'd also love to meet/talk on the phone with you about your thoughts on where this whole project should go. That's just, I mean, wow. *Terms subject to change if we all come up with something cooler!
