Hip-hop comedy is complete & being selected by festivals but the micro-budget is spent and we need to sweeten the sound & hit the road.
The Movie (the Elevator Pitch)
Camp Kickitoo is a comedy with hip-hop music, a musical of sorts. It also makes some important points about the imbalance in enforcement in the "war on drugs." It takes place at a camp unlike any you have ever seen before. The film was shot, on an impossibly low budget, in Austin and other locations in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
Here's an 88 second trailer that should give you a bit of the flavor:
Camp Kickitoo, a fast-paced hip-hop comedy, centers on the unlikely romance between an unemployed banker, and, a beautiful rapper. Recent MBA graduate and pretty good drummer, Alvin takes a summer job at Camp Kickitoo, which turns out to be not your usual summer camp, but, rather, a rehab facility for minor drug offenders. This introduces a mixed bag of colorful characters. Initially assigned to the kitchen as a pot washer, Alvin becomes a counselor in charge of Wanda, an angry camper, unjustly busted for marijuana possession. United by music, stormy relationship evolves into steamy love affair.
Progress of the Project
Except for some final audio post-production (sweetening and a 5.1 surround mix), the film is "in the can." You will find lots of cast, crew and production still photos on our Camp Kickitoo website. The film features several musical numbers. Here's a little excerpt with one of them, a rap to a jazz-blues beat, performed by Wanda (Yahel Johnson), called "Milk Maid":
We have submitted the film to a bunch of festivals and have screened at three of them so far. At one, the San Diego Black Film Festival, in January, we were presented with the "best comedy" award.
The Overworked, Underpaid Team
Our team of actors and crew consisted of some old pros and some talented newcomers but the one thing that they all had in common was that they were doing this project as a labor of love. It's not that they wouldn't have liked to be paid. We all could have used the dough, but we only had a small amount of cash to work with and that wasn't enough for even a little pay for all those hard working folks. So, if we are ever going to distribute any money to the cast and crew, we are going to have to get this film out to the world.
Why This Campaign?
Finishing and marketing a film ain't cheap, but we've gotten pretty good at stretching the dollars and getting a lot out of a little. We are seeking $15,000, which will pay for sound sweetening, the 5.1 mix, "four walling" the film in a couple of markets (renting theaters and doing our own screenings), travel to a couple of festivals and fees and travel to the American Film Market.
If we should be so fortunate to get more than our goal, then we will be able to attend more festivals, rent theaters for four walling in more markets and establish a greater presence at the American Film Market, increasing our chances of getting distribution.
A Few Credits
The film's producer/co-director is Ric Sternberg, with co-director Mike Sullivan. Ric wrote the screenplay, with help from Sully, and Ric also served as editor, ran the B camera and played a small role on camera. Sully also served as production designer, had an on-screen supporting role and helped coordinate many aspects of the production. Our director of photography was Phil Curry. Bennet "Flash" Spielvogel mixed the music in the studio and also served as location sound mixer. Riddlore? and Robert Skiles composed the music. Caroline Pruet did the costumes, Allie Towell headed up hair and makeup (so to speak) and Rob Hicks was key grip (you probably have no idea how crucial having a great key grip is).
Camp Kickitoo's cast includes some terrific young talent, along with some seasoned veterans. Our leads are Chae Balistreri, as Alvin, and Yahel Johnson, as Wanda. Complete credits for the entire cast and crew are available on our website in the credits section.
You can also find cast and crew credits on our IMDb page.
Check out the cool rewards
We hope that you will want to back this project because you believe that it is a unique film that deserves a chance at wide distribution, and you want to be part of its success. But that doesn't mean that you won't like some of the rewards we are offering at various backing levels.
In addition to these rewards, we are offering a hand-stitched, lacy yellow parasol, which was used as a prop in the film by the character Sunny and our beloved, hand painted slate, with bus-shaped clapper, which was used to mark every shot we shot (see the project video above to get a look at these rewards). We are also going to give away our wonderful, hand graffitied school bus to someone who will give it a good home (and make a $10,000 pledge).
Please remember, like everything else here on Kickstarter, if we don't make our goal, we get nothing. We appreciate your backing us in this exciting project. Thanks.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.

When we were beginning the production process, our Associate Producer, Annie Borden (who is a terrific painter and 3D artist), created a few beautiful 3D storyboards. It quickly became apparent that it was way too time consuming and way more detail than we really needed so we switched to more traditional type hand-drawn storyboards. But tell you what we're gonna do: Anyone backing us at the $800 level will get, in addition to the above rewards, signed prints of two those storyboard frames, each matted with a print of a frame from the finished film.Estimated delivery: Jul 2012
