A message from Alex! 

My name is Alex Urner.  I’m an 8 year old boy who loves to invent things. I always wanted to write a book and with the help of my aunt Kim and a film crew, I learned how!  I am even learning how to act, perform and learn what it takes to work on a film behind the scenes. 

I want to make sure that people can learn about how not to bully, so I am creating a story about this in a soft cover book.   I’ve been working hard this last 6 months writing a story that helps people learn more about how not to bully and when you bully how it hurts people. 

I want to visit schools and share my story, so that kids can learn how to handle things when they are being bullied or how not to bully.  In order to do this I need help to pay for producing the book and the film I act in called Alex Writes a Book with Nate the Dragon.  I think that if everyone reads our story and watched our animated film they will know how to handle themselves a little better when a bully comes along.

The Story behind the film:  Why was this Project Started?

It all started with a simple act, to “ask”.  A courageous eight year old boy asked, “Auntie Kim, can you help me write a children’s book?” Of course I said, “Yes!”

His determination to learn how to write a book without even knowing where to begin provided a multitude of gifts.  I learned that answering a simple request can impact and alter the course of a community and a small boy’s life and myself, without even realizing how that simple act to help is significant in a child’s life.  I realized this process unlocked hidden stories of conflict, resistence and self-infliction.  I learned that a community bullies a little boy and he didn’t have tools or solutions or even a person to go to to handle it.  Nobody addresses bullying.  The experiences of bullying is pushed under the carpet and hidden as if it didn’t happen.  Through this experience, we help each other discover solutions.   Alex’s grades turned around, he learned how to act in front of the camera, he learned about the set design process for stage production, he learned that it takes a lot of effort and people support to create a 5 minute short film and he is introduced to the professional theater community.  Alex is more confident and smarter about the world around him.  And best of all, Alex and I are now good buddies!

The experience has been a wonderful gift. The animated short film and book are the results of a simple, courageous little boy, “asking” for help.

What’s Alex Writes a Book with Nate the Dragon about?

Alex shares with Nate how he helped him write his first book.  Alex creates his book, a stuffed toy of the main character, Nate with bookmarks.  Alex talks about his journey in this 5 minute film.  He talks with Nate the made-up animated character that helped him write his story.  Nate listens to Alex every day as he created his story.  In the film, a captivated audience is interested in what Alex has to say.  Before Alex knows it, he is amidst a large audience of curious animals.  This fun film is an inspiration for audiences of all ages.

Objective: An opportunity for the community to open up and talk about sensitive issues like Achieve Your Dreams, The Obstacles in The Way, and Anti-Bullying.

• Provides the opportunity for the community to open up and talk about sensitive issues like: Achieve Your Dreams, Obstacles in The Way, and Anti-Bullying (stories, songs, activities)
• Allows Community to talk about evolution of Dream
• The audience can take away "What’s great about this for every circumstance?"
• Pose the question, Who or What is the Dragon in Your Life?
• Group Song Writing
• Present story “Alex had a dream and suddenly achieving more things”
• Meets with each grade (1-6) each class creates a song together.  In the evening, the PTO sponsors an evening family event with a Parents concert (kids sing/play song on the spot) and singer/songwriter sings additional songs.
• Anti-bullying singing assembly (songs and book)
• It takes a community!!  Film making process, present story “Alex Writes a Book" and some film crew present to share their role.
• Focus on the topic of Anti-bullying (book, songs and stories)
