Schedule and Conference Sessions

Update #1 · Sep 5, 2012 · 6 comments

Dear Backers,

Thank you so much for your overwhelming support in the first weeks of the campaign. We're so excited to create an incredible day for you on the 29th. Today we're announcing our block schedule, and asking you what you want to hear from our amazing presenters.

Schedule for September 29th:

9:30 - Registration at 41 Cooper Square

10-1 - Morning Block:

  • Sessions in the Rose Theater
  • Sessions in LL101

1-2 - Lunch

2-6 - Afternoon Block:

  • Sessions in the Rose Theater
  • Sessions in LL101

6-8:30 - Dinner

8:30 - Concert in the Rose Theater

We're going to mix presentations by single artists, talking about their art and how they've built careers, with panel discussions on subjects that matter to you. Put your ideas, and your questions, in the comments section on this backer update, and we'll put those together with our presenters' own ideas and design a conference just for you. Be quick! We're going to announce the full schedule in about a week. Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

  • Time: the work/work balance between art and money
  • Funding: grants, crowdfunding, and everything else
  • Distribution: new and old ways of getting art out there
  • Community: beyond fans and audiences
  • Producing: Making Things Happen(tm)

We have two rooms, an amazing group of presenters, an unbelievable range of topics we could discuss, and just one day. We're going to have be ruthless in combining ideas, focusing them, and saving some for next time.

But now we want to hear from you. Tell us in the comments what questions you have for our presenters. What do you want to know about what they do and how they do it? What do you struggle with in your artistic life, and how can we help?

It's hard to know what makes a good topic. Here's a question to ask yourself to help refine your ideas. It comes from Rose Fox, an amazing editor and conference organizer: "Think about how your idea for a panel will go. Think about the Q&A after the panel discussion. What's the first question? That's your panel topic."

If you're talking about "money" in a roomful of artists, and then you open it up to the Q&A, the first question is going to be "How can I get more money?" That's what the panel should be about. We can't wait to hear your ideas.

Thank you again for your support. We're looking forward to meeting you on the 29th.

-Kevin, Zach, and Victoria

The Tumblr people mentioned at the conference brainstorming meeting that they often do office hours at events, where individuals can do Q&A on specific topics without the whole room having to listen. They'd help you with your settings, tags, etc. We're working on arranging an office hours table where people with skills can sign up & teach one on one - Kickstarter basics, blogging, SEO, basic film and audio production, budgeting - the whole thing, as much as we have time to be donated by people. This is still in the works, but I'll let you know when we have it ready!

Zach, Kevin, sorry for my late answer. The program is out now and I'm not sure we'd be able to talk about these tools (free or not). I like your idea, Zach, of a PDF manual. Is that something that could be produced after the conference and put on your tumblr?

@Thomas I love the DIY tips idea. In a similar vein, I'm always interested in what new (and free) programs can help. As Kevin points out, this does sound like more of a clinic, but it would be awesome. My late night thoughts are now picturing something like a PDF manual for the DIY artist...

This is a great point. We've been talking mostly about panels and presentations, not clinics. But doing something like this, or maybe even "fifteen minute film school" might be a good option.

      Kevin, Zach, Victoria,

Everything sounds great! What about a discussion covering the basic web-related skills that an artist should have to have an efficient web presence? Across all domains? Tips on basic HTML, photo editing, video editing, SEO, Social Media, etc. and how to build those skills on one's own? We are clearly in a DIY situation where artists need to be visible but cannot afford professional services. Still, most of what's out there is free and requires very little time investment. Just a thought. I am looking forward to joining the conversation and meeting Megan :)

      Kevin, Zach, and Victoria,

This has such great potential to open a discussion about what artists & the arts community need right now. I would love to participate in a dialogue about arts residencies with specifics about reaching across disciplines.

I would also love to talk with Thomas Deneuville and others about becoming more socially involved across different cultural sectors. I find that it is vitally important that artists/musicians/composers/writers reach out beyond their innate tribes to generate an audience.
