matireal is a geo-textile transforming an environmental nightmare into an ecological dream that inspired a new park called the artery.
matireal has been described as a win-win-win-win-win situation. Have you ever heard of more than three wins? Forget four. We've got five on it.
- win #1: matireal removes hazardous waste from the environment, transforming this infinite resource into a geo-textile.
- win #2: matireal is a low-tech solution that reduces tires locally, creating a measureable carbon offset from current recycling methods.
- win #3: matireal can fund manufacturing jobs through revenue associated with municipal disposal costs (up to $2/tire).
- win #4: matireal can be constructed by and for the communities it connects, helping to revitalize neighborhoods and integrate Milwaukee.
- win #5: this catalytic product will matirealize the artery, and is an ecological best management practice, replicable on a global scale.
As an unfunded organization, beintween's mission is to make [art] do [work]. Often there is a tremendous amount of leverage when we combine our physical resources with our creative ones. We've made some brilliant friends, particularly through our partnership with ART Milwaukee, while making a difference rather than a dollar. But in this case, we need your support to get our hands on one of these:
Here's why: we're required to have a shipping container to store and reduce tires on site. We also need to make a few modifications, purchase our own Milwaukee power tools, and several hundred blades to make the local reduction of tires more efficient. If we generate additional funding, we will devote this to research, development, and replication of this flexible, modular, and extremely ecological model as an alternative to current permeable systems.
After collaborating with neighbors, the property owner, and the city, as well as tooling hundreds of tires, we came up with matireal as a catalytic path surface for the artery, a linear park that will reclaim a 2.4 mile long rail corridor and connect communities. Now that we have a replicable prototype, we are ready to move up in scale and begin blazing our matireal trail in the spring of 2013.
Our 'creational trail will make its debut at the artery by crossing the overpass to link the Harambee (literally translated all pull together) neighborhood to the Riverworks Center, still infrastructurally divided by the now privately owned rail corridor. Here is a look at that specific area:
Residents of Harambee who live west of the pass are currently descending a steep, eroding foot path, then dashing across a six lanes without a traffic signal to meet their retail needs (dashed in orange). In addition to adopting matireal as a path to integrate this community at grade without ever negotiating traffic (dotted in white), the property owner has granted beintween permission to place this shipping container (shown in white) atop the former rail overpass at Capitol Drive.
Our fillboard will become the first of a series of temporaneous, interactive art pieces improv(is)ing this leftover corridor to build community. As an traditional and ever-changing canvas for graffiti, it transcends culture and ethicity, class and creed. This evolving installation does not impose restrictions on how the community can inter(e)act with one another and this right of way.
Backing matireal is about more than helping us cut up tires or purchase a steel box though; its about getting behind a simple, low-tech revitalization concept that works within a neighborhood that is in many respects, without. matireal is a simple, hands on solution; yet it is also a narrative of our relationship with this site, the community, and months of experimentation with the automobile tire. Have a closer look:
Please keep our page bookmarked, check back on us often, and share this with friends. We are so excited we can hardly contain ourselves. With a successful kickstarter campaign, beintween.org can purchase a shipping container to matirealize the artery, which will create ecological access to nearly 20 acres along our 'creational trail for edible landscapes and interactive art to engage all people. We are confident that the creation of this linear park will break down major social, cultural, economic, and racial boundaries by stitching these along the artery. Help us lower the contrast in the city + make [art] do [work]!
We say thanks by sending you rewards for your generosity. Before I go any further, let me the introduce exactly what our backers will receive (ehmm, to give is also to receive).
FAQ's (frequently asked questions):
The artery is a linear park discovered by beintween that seeks to reclaim the former Wisconsin Southern rail corridor, addressing food desert issues and underprivileged communities of Milwaukee. The 2.4 mile stretch of privately-owned property offers 20 acres of land to integrate communities along a 'creational trail, connecting the Beerline Trail at Keefe & Richards to an extension of the Oak Leaf Trail beyond Hampton Avenue.
How did matireal evolve?
This replicable solution was founded from an analysis of perimeter census tracts in Milwaukee. This revealed the reality and repercussions of segregation in our city, which are most drastic along this former railroad.
Upon this discovery, beintween visited the site and identified two circumstances that inspired and informed its proposal of the artery. Foremost is the shape of this elongated parcel: it has incredible potential to stitch together extremely segregated tracts within the city. The artery is engaging locally-based organizations and artisans to adopt existing models that cultivate edible landscapes and improv(is)ational forms of art, nourishing and enhancing the neighborhoods it currently divides. Second is the overwhelming occurrence of illegal dumping within this corridor, largely comprised of discarded automobile tires: beintween removed these from the corridor and adjacent alleys as a catalyst of conversation with neighbors; this positive engagement lead to the investigation of the material's inherent properties, transforming this environmental nightmare into a new standard for ecological trails, called matireal.
How can I get involved?
What is beintween?
beintween is a social + spatial network improv(is)ing spaces to build community. We are now 150 members and are just two years old. Our agenda is to make the most of leftover time and space. Our interest is local and our actions are integral.
We are all in between something - careers, homes, relationships - but in fact this is when and where we are most potent, and tend to surprise ourselves. Though this doesn't always coincide with our mood, the temperature, or our bank accounts, we are learning about ourselves, but more importantly, sharing our ideas with others.
beintween has found that creativity breeds creativity, especially when we work in a collaborative hands-on environment. We attempt to marry social + spatial needs, and use our own latent potential to better integrate communities.
We believe in matireal and its broader applications + aspirations. We hope you will find this a contagious idea. Thank you so much to those of you (know who you are) who have enabled the idea to evolve as quick as it has. To those social media gurus - thanks in advance.
We appreciate kickstarters for supporting creative endeavors and especially you for taking a few moments to discover matireal....for the record, its pronounced the same way as material, but spelled to genuflect to our catalyst. My apologies for any confusion you may have had in finding our project; we are glad you made it!
November will be an exciting month, and with your support, we'll be calling it Yesvember. If we are fortunate, we'll be can giving extra special thanks on the 22nd!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Risks and challenges involve the unprecedented nature of matireal; that said, beintween is at least ridding the area of this hazardous material. In the meantime, we are discovering many additional uses for tires, and love to experiment.
