A one-eyed cowboy from Montana and a city-slicker from NYC travel the West to find folks who are preserving the ways of the Old West.
WE'VE ALREADY PRESENTED OUR SIZZLE REEL TO SOME PRODUCERS AND AGENTS, AND THEY WANT TO SEE A FULL EPISODE! WE'RE RAISING MONEY TO COMPLETE A ONE HOUR PILOT.
A REALITY TV SERIES
There is no American icon greater than the cowboy and no part of the country more beautiful and fascinating than the West.
Ken Overcast is a one-eyed cowboy who lives on a ranch near the tiny town of Chinook, Montana. Jim Newman lives in New York City and has never even seen a real cowboy. Traveling in Ken’s old pickup truck, the two are looking for people who are keeping the western lifestyle alive.
The people they meet have made the decision to live life in a way that is often more simple, less cluttered and frequently fulfilling in ways that are largely unknown to the majority of our population.
Ken and Jim meet saddle makers, horse whisperers, cowboy poets, ranchers, western artists, cowboy musicians, hat makers and many other people who in different ways have chosen lifestyles that are preserving the heritage of the West. They visit western movie sets, rodeos, ranches, cattle drives and other events that are uniquely western.
The show offers education by visiting historic locations and also by talking with people who are preserving trades and traditions that date back to the nineteenth century. It finds entertainment in the constant bantering between Ken & Jim, unpredictable situations that arise and characters they meet along the way.
People from all over the world have a love affair with the American West and with the legendary cowboys who live and work there. With young people flocking to theaters to see the new westerns that Hollywood is producing and baby boomers wanting to relive the western movies they grew up watching, this road show offers the perfect subject matter to attract audience members of all ages.
OUR GOAL FOR THIS SERIES
One of my on-going goals in film production has been to produce work that can be viewed and enjoyed by anyone….from your grandma to your grandkid. I also believe that something can, and should be, entertaining and educational at the same time. In this project I want to highlight people who have made the choice to live a western lifestyle that has struggles, successes and value in ways that are different from what most of us experience day to day.
There’s a thing called the "Code of the West" that is important to many of the people that we’ve talked with. No written code ever actually existed, but early settlers who lived in the west were bound by these unwritten rules that centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty, and respect for the land. The characters that we’re involving in this project are the kind of folks who, without talking about it, live by this code.
WE CAN'T DO THIS ALONE -- WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We've invested countless hours and a whole lot of our own money in order to get the project to this point. It’s been fun but also extremely hard work.
We’ve gotten our foot in a few big doors. We’ve made contacts that are promising but these contacts want to see a more developed project. We have the skills and talent to provide this development, but it also takes more money.
Here are a few examples of where our Kickstarter funds will go:
- Editing and organizing the raw footage.
- Shooting additional footage that will develop some of our stories.
- Scripting and planning.
- Color correction.
- Sound mixing.
- Licensing the soundtrack.
- Researching & acquiring archival footage and photos.
Bottom line: We’ve spent a lot of time and money already, but we need help finishing a full episode in order to get it into the hands of network programming decision makers.
WHAT IF WE GO OVER OUR GOAL?
Many Kickstarter projects actually exceed their fund raising goals. If we are fortunate enough to be in that situation, it simply means that we will produce more than one episode. The cost per show goes down tremendously if we work on multiple episodes at the same time. The more shows we have completed, the better the chance that we'll find a network that wants to air the series.
HOW TO PLEDGE AND BECOME A BACKER!
You can become a backer in just three easy steps:
- Step 1: Read through the pledge levels and rewards we're offering in the right sidebar of this page and decide if there’s a level that is of interest to you.
- Step 2: Click the large, green "BACK THIS PROJECT" button to the right of the trailer video at the top of this page.
- Step 3: Enter your pledge amount - and complete the steps for filling in your information. This process takes just a few seconds!
Our only other request is that you share the project with your friends who might be interested in helping this series make it to a network so that you can have fun watching all of the episodes in the comfort of your home!
PLEASE NOTE: All Kickstarter campaigns are “all or nothing”. Your pledges aren't actually processed by Kickstarter unless the campaign is 100% successful. We meet our goal or we get nothing! We would like to thank you in advance for helping us meet this goal so that completion of Keeping the West Alive can move forward!
A FEW PEOPLE & PLACES WE'VE VISITED
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS!
Kickstarter has become the world’s largest source for funding arts related projects. At any given time, there are thousands of creative projects in dozens of categories that are being supported by pledges from tens of thousands of people.
In Kickstarter terminology, people who give “pledges” are called “backers”. Backers from all over the world make this amazing support system for the arts work..
When you become a backer, in return for your pledge, you will receive “rewards”. Rewards are determined by the creator of the project and vary according to the amount of the pledge.
Pledge levels vary from just $1 to hundreds of dollars. And each different level opens up a new, creative reward. (For a full list, check out the right side of the page.)
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
