The Meaning of a Song. . .
After a concert last night someone asked why we don't tell the audience what a song is about before we sing the song (sort of a tradition in folk circles).
The answer? We have discovered over the years that our songs mean many different things to many different people. The music is much more meaningful to people if they draw their own meaning and put their own personal experience in it.
For example, last Fall a band explained what Kathy's all-time favorite song, "Wait A Minute", was really about. In Kathy's opinion, "That song has now been ruined for all time because my personal thoughts and feelings were taken away in that moment of explaination". The band who originally did the song - the awesomely wonderful Seldom Scene - never explains what the song is about . . . . . and it has remained a beloved favorite for many, many years.
So feel free to ask for our personal stories behind our songs, we always love to share. Just don't be surprised if we ask for YOUR story in return!!
Song #2 - It's a Good 'Un!
Just heard the mix of the second song on the new CD - Look Away. Oh my goodness. . . . it's a heartbreaker - with some very cool three part harmony!
What's really fun about this song is that Kathy co-wrote it along with honky-tonk supersar Bob Manning OVER THE INTERNET last Winter. You can hear Bob's version of this song (from a male perspective) on his "Just What I Wanted" CD.
