Update #5: Flour on the way!
Hi everyone,
while we are sweating it out here in Chicago, the miller has had his own weather issues - heat and humidity literally gum up the works. But despite a few days of delay, I have the official word that milling will be complete today and there will be a truckload of INDUSTRIAL HARVEST FLOUR arriving in Chicago tomorrow!
Which is good, because most of what I brought back with me has been given away already. The giveaways have been totally successful and fun; see my account of the first couple of them here: http://industrialharvest.wordpress.com/2010/07/06/giving-taking-lots-of-baking/
This coming Tuesday I'll be doing another giveaway at the Hull House Museum Farmers' Market from 12:30 - 5:30: http://www.uic.edu/jaddams/hull/_programsevents/_farm/farmersmarket.html - so come by if you're in the neighborhood and say hello! If you give me advance notice I can bring 5-lb bags of flour for donors - I had some special ones packaged up.
Also, big thanks to new donors Suzanne, Martha, Leah, and my awesome Mom, who was my matching donor. It means so much to have your support! Keep passing the word to others that you think might be interested - I have just about another month to scare up another $2,000. Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition - if you don't make the goal, you don't get any of the money. So let's do it!
xxxooo,
Sarah
Update #4: Chicago!
It's been an eventful couple of weeks, starting with a truly touching display of generosity and support from the folks that came to the going away fundraiser (which doubled as a super fun house party) in Seattle. The big donation that you see from Rob Z is from all the great friends & neighbors that came out and contributed to the project. Thanks to Rich Lehl, our DJ and volunteer bartenders Rob & Adria, with extra special hugs & kisses to Rob, the absinthe maker and super organizer, for all his help.
And thanks is also due to Heike, Rachael, Scott, Judy, John & Eric (aka Beef) who all chipped in for the matching donation! Your contributions are going to double, thanks to the help of our anonymous matching donor.
After a 2-day train ride across the wheat fields of Montana & the Dakotas, I'M IN CHICAGO - ! - scrambling to make all the arrangements necessary to buy, transport, mill and store a huge pile of wheat. This is where things start getting really exciting, so check the website and blog for stories, pictures, and events:

For those of you in Chicago, I'll be making a couple of appearances in upcoming weeks:
THIS SATURDAY (the 19th) I'll be leading a group bread baking session from 1-5 pm at Angelic Organics' South End Learning Center as part of their Summer Solstice celebration: http://www.csalearningcenter.org/node/2614 - drop by any time, roll up your sleeves and say hello!
Tuesday, June 29th I'll be giving a talk at the Hull House Museum at noon, as part of their "ReThinking Soup" lunch series: http://www.uic.edu/jaddams/hull/_programsevents/_kitchen/_rethinkingsoup/rethinkingsoup.html
This will be the last ReThinking Soup until the fall, so come by and participate in some thoughtful discussion AND the celebratory atmosphere. I'll be fresh off my trip to the grain elevators and the mill, and so am hoping to do a little slideshow as part of the talk.
We are almost halfway there, with 7 weeks to go, so keep getting the word out! Your endorsement and good words are going to be crucial to putting this over the top.
With gratitude,
Sarah
Update #3: Be a match-maker!
Wow, the past week has flown by and now we are over 20% of the way to the goal - way to go, everyone! A huge thanks to new backers Kathryn and Optek Inc.
I have some exciting news to share: an anonymous donor has offered to match all kickstarter donations made to the project in the next ten days, up to $500. If you’ve been planning to make a donation, it will now go twice as far. So, spread the word!
For those of you in Seattle who are going to be coming out to the going away party / fundraiser at our place on Friday, June 11 – if you donate before then, you will be rewarded with a night of free party drinks! Not that my undying gratitude isn’t enough, but Rob (my mate) is making a batch of his homemade absinthe (it's actually infused vodka, we don’t have a still out back…yet…) and we're planning some delicious absinthe cocktails. We'll have beer & wine too, but the absinthe is something special indeed.
Update #2: Flour Labels
Wow - one week on Kickstarter & over 10% of the way there! This is great - a huge thanks to new donors Anne, David & Susan.
So that all you backers (and potential backers) can get a little taste of what you'll be getting, I'm posting the label design for the flour. My miller is Greenfield Mills / New Rinkel flour, a water-powered artisan mill on the IN / MI border that's been owned by the same family for 5 generations: http://www.newrinkelflour.com/
Update #1: thanks to the early backers!
Rob, Beef, Paul, Ali, Susan, John: You all are awesome! It was so satisfying to come back from a weekend away from the computer and see your names listed as backers. Thanks for jumping in early & getting this off to such a good start.

I am an artist and urban planner whose work crosses discipline and medium to cultivate a dialogue about community, culture, and the world around us. I'm a born & bred Midwesterner, raised in back-to-the-land style in rural Ohio in the 70s. I now live in Seattle after stints in the mountains of Virginia & Pennsylvania, Washington DC, the Czech countryside, and Brooklyn (hello, Gowanus!). I have a masters' degree in urban planning and work part time for a small firm that does research on walkable communities - kind of like being part of a for-profit think tank.
My dual career has allowed me to take on a pretty wide variety of creative, academic, and political pursuits and experiences. I've shown my studio artwork at numerous venues around Seattle, have been published in academic and non-academic publications, and served on boards for government and nonprofit organizations. The Industrial Harvest project is part of a body of temporary public work that intersects artistic practice with community, science and research.
