Update #7: Next Steps
Update #6: Arts-based Environmental Learning
Dear Friends,
I wanted to be super clear about what the $5,000 we are raising will cover:
- Local transportation and film costs for roughly 10 field expeditions
- Studio space in San Francisco to make the presentation
- Flight to NYC (Apr) and Santa Fe (Aug)
- Create a searchable online archive for the project
- Light refreshments at our public offerings
- Small stipend for our guest speakers (local wildlife experts)
With your support, I will offer presentations in venues in San Francisco, Santa Fe, and New York City AND maintain a searchable online archive with films, photos, notes from the project, as well as links to partnering organizations.
30 days are left to reach our goal.
Please help us spread the word!
Karl
Update #5: Happy New Year!
Update #4: 2010
Update #3: Notes From the Archive #1
For the past two years I have been devoting my creative energy to harvesting, documenting, and performing movement practices based on encounters with my environment. My primary motivation during this period has been the desire to build a more-detailed, visceral map of the world through direct experience.
With the development of the Somatic Natural History Archive, my art practice has taken an important step forward. By exploring how specific plants and animals express themselves in relationship to their environmental contexts, my interactions with different environments have become more focused, detailed, and purposeful.
My motivation to work on the Archive day-in/day-out is propelled by a single vision. In this vision I have completed Series 1, the embodied history of 10,000 plants and animals. I am roughly 90 years old. I hold in my bones, muscles, nerves, and inexplicable essence the life histories of these organisms. Through my dutiful rendering of their myriad expressions, I have come to understand something essential about the nature of life itself. I have gone through the individual to see the whole. I take comfort in the companionship and good work of all the other curious explorers in my midst.
Perhaps you might find it useful to start at the end of your own creative journey. You don’t have to know in this moment how you will get there, but you can come to know what you might feel upon arrival. That feeling can then be held in your daily practice, and can guide you on your way.
More soon!

Update #2: 20% towards our goal!
Woohoo!
In our first week, we've secured $1,000 in pledges!
This is a fantastic start.
In order to reach our goal of $5,000, we will need to continue spreading the word.
Please forward our Kickstarter page to any friends and family whom you think might be interested.
Let them know you backed the project and why it appeals to you.
More information coming soon on the species I will be indexing with your support.
With warm appreciation,
Karl Cronin
