THE COLD, HARD FACTS: I am writing a book. I am making a new full-length album. The project is entitled CMYK.
WHAT IS THE CMYK PROJECT ABOUT?
Good question. I'm glad I asked me that. It started with a letter I received that spoke directly to me and the moment I was living in. It gave me a sense of hopeful context that I was in was one moment of my life's process and that my life was part of a yet larger and even more hopeful process. I wanted to write something for friends and loved ones, some of whom I know in my role as a pastor, who found themselves in moments similar to mine. Fifteen songs and letters later, I had the beginning of CMYK. I posted a few of the letters at my blog and released the fifteen songs on three EP's entitled C, M and Y. All along, I've had the vision of bringing this project to completion in a more comprehensive and meaningful form, including the CMYK book and the album, "K." Help me make that happen.
WHY IS IT CALLED CMYK?
In the CMYK print process,
every one of the colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) is a
necessary part of the process. I believe the same to be true of life.
Some moments might be more bright, happy yellow, some a moodier blue
(cyan) and some have their fair share of flashy pink (magenta) but no moment is without meaning and no moment is wasted.
In fact, in the printing process, the Cyan, Magenta and Yellow ink
plates are aligned (or "keyed") with the black ink plate, meaning that the darkest element in the process is perhaps the most vital. Abraham Kuyper wrote "There
is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over
which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!" I want this project to help provide that kind of hopeful context for those who read and listen.
WHATIS GONNA BE IN THE BOOK?
The book features the letters I've written to loved ones and friends as well as essays, reflections and stories I'm writing centered on the themes highlighted in the letters. The book will also feature original visual art, made in relationship to the songs from the CMYK project by Macha Suzuki, Dylan Mortimer and Laura Van Duren.
WHAT'S GONNA BE ON THE ALBUM?
Working with producers Masaki Liu and Dustin Smith, we are fully re-imagining key songs from the C, M and Y EP's (already available) and then tying them together with recordings of traditional songs that have been key to my process as a person of faith.

If you're having a hard time choosing, I'd suggest closing your eyes and throwing a dart at your monitor. After you've replaced that, I really like the Book Club packages but that's because I'm something of a book nerd and it means being in conversation for a year.

I'd rather not think of it as giving it away so much as "passing it on." Like the Olympic torch.. or a half eaten sandwich. We're using a few different guitars on the sessions and we're not done yet... so it would be kinda impossible to say. What I CAN say is that I will have played it and some of the sounds on K will have been made by that guitar... which I will pass on to you... like the gravy boat on Thanksgiving.
