Help June and Jean Millington fund the release and promotion of their new album of original songs, "Play Like a Girl".
June and Jean Millington started their first all-girl band in the '60's and by the end of the decade had a record deal with their band Fanny. They toured the U.S. and Europe, recorded at Apple Studios and were on every big television show of the era, sharing the stage with Sly and the Family Stone, Chicago, Chuck Berry, Dr. John, The Staples Singers and many others. David Bowie said of the group in Rolling Stone magazine, “ They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time.... They were extraordinary: They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers.... They are as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever....” (January 2000) The Millington sisters have continued to make great music ever since.
June is the only woman who played both in the beginning of women in rock and the early women's music movement. In the '80's she and Jean (who took time off from her career to have two children) united to release a series of albums. In 1987 June co-founded the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) to support women and girls in music and music-related business. The highly successful school now runs rock programs for girls in the summer. The title cut of the CD "Play Like a Girl" is inspired by their musical journey and their work with girls in the rock camps, who sing on several of the songs.
Everything musical that the Millingtons have done in their lives is reflected in this album. Now they would like to publicize, promote and tour to support it. As June says, "We want to continue to mentor girls through showing them that women of all ages can go out there and rock. "
With this money we plan to pay for art and manufacturing, hire a publicist and have enough tour support to bring our show to a town near you. This is a generational thing - Jean's son is playing drums on the album, the girls from the rock camps are singing on it and, as June says, "It feels as if we've come full circle and this thing is a big thank-you to the universe."
