About this project

I am currently in my senior year as a filmmaking student at Montclair State University in New Jersey and am working on my thesis film. I am adapting a short story written by Amanda Davis, who died in a plane crash about six years ago along with both of her parents. She never got a chance to promote her beautiful novel. Fortunately, her wonderful husband has given me the rights to one of her previous short stories, "Fat Ladies Floated in the Sky Like Balloons." Yes, there are literally fat ladies floating in the sky!

"Fat Ladies" is about a woman named Eloise who is trapped in a marriage agreement with a man who needed to become a citizen. Her life is systematic and gloomy unlike her imaginative and eccentric personality. One day, everything suddenly looks brighter. The sun is out and the clouds are perfect. Except, there are ladies floating in the sky and immediately she knows what this means: Her ex-boyfriend is in town. Everything begins to float all around her and life seems to make sense again. As her heart breaks open, she can't help but follow it to wherever it takes her. Far away, maybe..

You can read the story here: http://www.mcsweeneys.net/archives/likeballoons.html

I fell in love with this story when I first read it. Right away I imagined Eloise's world in two ways: the dark gloomy interiors of her home and the warm blue skies of her imagination. As an artist of many media who is surrounded by so many other incredibly talented people, I would like to make this one giant art project of a film. By using unconventional settings such as rooftops and building an imaginary kitchen, I would like to take the audience on a ride they have never been on before. I want more than just a seat filled in front of a screen. I want a heart pounding and a world of imagination engulfing every single man, woman and child who watches it. But mostly, I want to promote reading and following our hearts when they speak to us.
