As my mother's birthday approached following her death, a great idea fell from my brain. Throw a party—not simply in memory of my mother, but in celebration of mothers everywhere. That party and the five that have followed draw on my mother's love of gardens, cooking and books. It's the best idea I ever had!
Celebration in the Garden features stories of some 25 Southern women of all ages who have attended this party. But it is much more than a collection of profiles. In choosing stories that connect women to their mothers, the influence of all women is illuminated. Taking a cross-generational approach allows for an uncommon feminine perspective on the last century. By connecting these stories to recipes from the women's youth, readers have an opportunity to experience more than words alone can convey. They can smell and taste the texture of these women's lives.
