Hey There,
If you don't know me, or aren't familiar with me already,
My name is a Juba Kalamka. I'm an interdisciplinary artist/activist based in Oakland,California, USA.
I'd like to complete of studio recording/mastering and manufacture of a 2500 piece multimedia project. The proposed budget would fund completion of
- final recording and mastering
- 1000 CDs,
- 1000 perfect-bound lyric chapbooks
- 500 7" vinyl 45rpm records of two songs from the CD
- postage, promotional materials and project related ephemera
If my Kickstarter project is successful, I'm projecting a public release date in early December,2010. This is as near as possible to the release of the Yale Anthology of Rap (Yale University Press, 2010). The anthology contains lyrics from the "Ooogabooga Under Fascism" album track "Yeoman Johnson" , academic essays by myself in a classroom version of the anthology as well as a song from my previous group project, Deep Dickollective (2000-2008).
I've spent the the bulk of my energies since 2000 on group projects and booking, curatorial and artist/activist ventures on behalf of a loose-knit international scene of out LGBT hip hop artists, with much of my personal work extending into intersectional advocacy (sex worker rights, disability rights activism and more). I've been attempting to coordinate completion of the CD since late 2006 (an EP version of early edits was released in February, 2006 as "The Ooogaboogabeats EP"). The scope of it grew to include a lyric chapbook after I completed a MFA degree in Poetics in Spring 2007.
I work full time as an HIV test counselor/client advocate for a large international not for profit. Though I'm very serious about my work as an artist and been very privileged to receive significant attentions I have for my art though traveling for performing/lecturing, my paraprofessional status as an independent performing artist hasn't provided adequate funding to complete a project in the manner I would have liked, even on a relative low-end production scale.
Having this project funded would provide me with a quality product and promotional items to encourage public support of my future projects as well as promotional materials for future performance and lecture events in support of other activist entities and concerns.
That said, the Reward set-up as is such that you can give a little as ONE DOLLAR and still get something in return in addition to my vociferous thank you-thank you's and virtual hugs. I know most of the people I know and the hundreds who I've met throughout my career as an artist/activist don't have tons of money...but I've met a LOT of people. I'm hoping that if I am someone you've met , or you've been at a show where I performed and dug what you saw that what I did was cool enough that you'd be willin' to throw a couple coins my way. :-).
All reward premiums not involving travel would be received by project contributors by February 15,2011.
If you are of the credit/debit card-less lot, no thing. That's real.
Email me at juba(at) jubakalamka(dot) com for details on how to contribute..
If you don't have anything to give but good wishes, that's OK too. I'd appreciate if you could pass the word on about my project to people who you think might be interested and able to, if you would.
Thanks so very much in advance for your continued encouragement and support.
best,
Juba Kalamka
