Update #16: THEY HAVE ARRIVED!

Posted on March 25, 2010

Six boxes of DVD's arrived at my house via FedEx yesterday afternoon! I'm really happy with how it turned out and I know all of you will be too! I am leaving to set up the show in New York and start the tour in a couple of days so I won't be able to send any out to you guys until I get back unfortunately. If you are in or near any of the cities that we are going please, please stop by and I will give you your copy! In the meantime here is an exclusive look (for you backers only) of when I opened the first box of dvds. Share in the magic.

Update #11: It's been a while, hasn't it?

Posted on January 19, 2010

Sorry for the lack of updates on the progress on the project. It seems that choosing a template is a lengthy process. I have a feeling that by the end of this week I will have chosen the perfect format. I will also be heading into the local media-arts co-op called EM-MEDIA (http://www.emmedia.ca) in the next week or so in order to author and master the DVD to get it ready to be sent to the manufacturer.

I hope you all had a happy Christmas and New Year's. Here is a photo from the first day of 2010:

Update #5: In the beginning

Posted on November 12, 2009

Many years ago, while in high school, my art teacher, Vivian Thompson, encouraged me to develop a student initiated project for credit. I decided that after seeing the film "Begone Dull Care" by Norman McLaren that I would do one based on camera-less filmmaking. What I learned during this semester laid the ground work for this present project. Watch the film that started it all below!

Update #4: Chad VanGaalen Shares his experience! Another new still!

Posted on November 6, 2009

Direct from Chad VanGaalen: "Working on the sounds for Jonathan's film pieces was perfect for me! They were very short, which made working on all of them at once very easy. Also the images were very condusive to trippy synth noodle sounds. The films are very dense, so i could put almost any sound over top of them and get things syncing up like right away. Plus i tend to love things that are old sounding and old looking, and all of the stock footage that jonathan used was vintage, and that put me in a good spot to start from. I like this kind of collaborative work, its something that forces you to respond, and for me was very playfull." chad van gaalen

Since I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2001 I have been creating, sharing, and participating in collaborative/interactive art that uses and re-uses ordinary objects, materials, and circumstances to help others to see their world differently. What started as a practice focused around IN TRANSIT: a portable gallery, which was a gallery with regular programming that existed inside a small red suitcase, quickly expanded into a web-based “school” called the IN TRANSIT Centre for Creative Observation where participants were invited to complete monthly assignments that were regularly posted on the web page. Since then, IN TRANSIT has presented a performance tour with Berkeley, CA musician Half-Handed Cloud, a two month long tea party performance, a series of “world record” prints, album covers, posters, peep box dioramas, a series of drawings based around TV viewing habits, and now a 16 mm film project.

The common thread in all of my work is collaboration. Whether it is collaboration with other artists, record companies, or viewers themselves nearly all of my work has involved other people. This 16 mm film project is no different. It is the most ambitious project I have worked on to date.
