About this project

Over the last 4 years I have scratched, painted on, stamped over, and projected old 16mm films. With the collaboration of I Heart Lung, Chad VanGaalen, Deneir, and Son Lux I have created 20 short, but visually and sonically rich videos from these 16mm films.

Originally this project was supposed to be collected and released as a DVD through an American record label. Due to unforeseen circumstances this will no longer be possible so I would like to design, produce, and manufacture a high quality CD/DVD package of this project myself. The plan is to collect all the videos on one DVD and have the audio of each video available on a separate audio CD. Included in this CD/DVD package would be a 50-75 page booklet of full colour stills from the project. I have already sent the audio portion of the project to be mastered properly. I will be using local artist-run media centre EM MEDIA to help me to author and master the DVD. The manufacturing of the project will be handled either by Discmakers or Bellwether. These are two companies that I have worked with in the past when designing record covers for various artists, so I know that they do quality work. The money raised through Kickstarter will be to fund the manufacturing costs of this package.

A project like this has been in my mind since I was first introduced to the work of Norman McLaren in high school. Ever since then I have been experimenting with “scratch animation,” and using those experiments in music videos and installations. Over the four years that I have been working on this project I have learned a lot about working with video and film, and have made some valuable contacts along the way. Sharing this work with others will help to carry forward the momentum that I have been building and open new doors for myself and others who have contributed.

CONTRIBUTOR BIOGRAPHIES:

Chad VanGaalen is a Calgary-based artist, musician, and animator. His music and animations have received international critical acclaim and have been featured on Yo Gabba Gabba and Sub Pop Records. VanGaalen and I have kept in contact since attending the Alberta College of Art and Design together. His psychedelic forays into analogue synths and home-made instrumental improvisation play beautifully alongside my films.

I Heart Lung is an avant garde jazz duo from Long Beach, CA. Their most recent album, Interoceans, was voted as one of the "Top 5 Jazz CD's of 2008" by National Public Radio. I have worked with the guitarist/producer Chris Schlarb in the past designing covers for his record label Sounds Are Active. I Heart Lung releases music on Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty record label.

Denier is the musical alias for Los Angeles-based composer Victor Ribadeneira. Deneir's music is wonderfully concise and completely unpredictable. Victor's most recent album, Nowhen, featured a rare remix by electronic duo Autechre. Since I first heard his work, I knew it would be perfect for these films.

Son Lux is the recording project of Anticon Records artist, Ryan Lott. Based out of New York, Ryan creates songs that, according to Nico Muhly, “are sort of formless electrolieder... [that] dissolve and emerge like a whale breaching in slow motion.” Before this project started he was unknown to me. A mutual friend suggested that we collaborate on this project.

Since I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2001 I have been creating, sharing, and participating in collaborative/interactive art that uses and re-uses ordinary objects, materials, and circumstances to help others to see their world differently. What started as a practice focused around IN TRANSIT: a portable gallery, which was a gallery with regular programming that existed inside a small red suitcase, quickly expanded into a web-based “school” called the IN TRANSIT Centre for Creative Observation where participants were invited to complete monthly assignments that were regularly posted on the web page. Since then, IN TRANSIT has presented a performance tour with Berkeley, CA musician Half-Handed Cloud, a two month long tea party performance, a series of “world record” prints, album covers, posters, peep box dioramas, a series of drawings based around TV viewing habits, and now a 16 mm film project.

The common thread in all of my work is collaboration. Whether it is collaboration with other artists, record companies, or viewers themselves nearly all of my work has involved other people. This 16 mm film project is no different. It is the most ambitious project I have worked on to date.
