Update #13: First Schoolbox Complete!

Posted on April 11

The first School Box reward is complete, and I have to say I am pleased with how it turned out. Much was learned, and I expect the remaining boxes will go a bit more quickly. So much of the construction was figuring things out, and with many of my questions answered, the next ones should just go faster and faster. This was made from an alder tree which my neighbor cut down in his yard across the street. Its very satisfying to make something entirely by hand and of entirely local materials, barring a bit of glue and some nails and hardware!

Read more at thejoinersapprentice.com and thanks again for your support on this prokect. Some big news is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Update #10: Packing Boxes are Finished and will ship soon!

Posted on November 14, 2011

As always, if you are reading this in email and the images do not come through, please see the kickstarter site.  Also, most of the images referred to here are available at the project blog:

The big news this week is that all three Packing Box rewards are complete and will be shipped soon.  Tool rolls and patches are also going out, so watch your mailbox!

Here's how the boxes came out:

And one packed up as it might be for Mr. Green:

These were a blast to make and much was learned.  I will soon be doing some warm-up exercises (dovetail month!) and then on with the Schoolboxes.

Thanks again for your support and interest in the project.  It continues to be rewarding beyond expectation and while my time is not always as available as I would like, it is more and more clear that this is what I want to be doing.

Your Apprentice,

rob

Packing Box - The packing box is the first project detailed by Thomas the apprentice in the Joiner and Cabinetmaker. It is a small box used to protect books for their journey by carriage. The antique version of a cardboard moving box, this one will, rather than being thrown away or even recycled, instead last several lifetimes and be useful for anything you can think of to protect. Built of unfinished wood and without hinges, it is ideal for storing items for the long-term. Its designed to be nailed shut (pre-drilled nail holes and cut nails will be provided with it - just as in the case of Thomas's box), but hinges could easily be added. Each box will be pre-drilled to accept the cut nails, and ample nails to seal the box will be included, just as they were with Thomas's box.

7 Backers SOLD OUT (0 of 7 remaining)

School Box - The school box is a beautiful dovetailed box with wrought-iron strap-hinges, a lock, and a removable partition inside. The box was made for a wealthy young schoolboy to hold his books and the partition was for his "amusements" (marbles and tops) and snacks. It will be finished in your choice of milk paint colors or a plain linseed oil/varnish finish. This will become a family heirloom closely intertwined with not only the apprentice in The Joiner and Cabinetmaker, but also the story of your own apprentice.

Estimated Delivery: Dec 2012

1 Backer SOLD OUT (0 of 1 remaining)

Chest of Drawers - The Chest of Drawers is Thomas's final project before becoming a Journeyman. Simple yet beautiful in details. Unfortunately, this item will not ship well and will only be available for pickup at my shop, or local delivery.
