We are seeking funding for the catalog of John M. White’s 40-year retrospective exhibition, scheduled for Spring 2011 at the Armory Center for the Art
Our goal is to design and publish a major catalog in conjunction with the exhibition “Life Lines: A Retrospective Exhibition of John M. White’s Performance, Installation, Sculpture, Drawings & Paintings” scheduled to open on March 27, 2011 at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, CA. “Life Lines” will feature documentary work about several of John’s noteworthy performances, along with key examples of the static work he has been producing since the late 1960s. In addition, the artist has graciously committed to do a site-specific performance sometime shortly after the opening.
The Catalog Description: Our dream catalog will have over 100 illustrations of John’s works, along with an introduction by curator Betty Ann Brown; essays by Fidel Danieli, Peter Frank, Joan Hugo, and David Pagel; as well as critical and performance texts by the artist. White has made a significant contribution to California art for more than four decades. An innovative and highly respected performance artist, accomplished painter, sculptor, and inspirational teacher, White has exhibited consistently to overwhelmingly positive reviews. In spite of his remarkable accomplishments, White’s groundbreaking oeuvre is not nearly as well known as that of many of his contemporaries. This retrospective exhibition seeks to locate White’s work in the place of prominence it deserves.
