About this project

The Carrack Modern Art is a zero-commission, no-strings-attached exhibit space for artists in the downtown area of Durham, NC. We stay open entirely on donations from the community and encourage artists to take full control of their shows... why? There is a simple premise: by being entirely zero-commission, non-commercial and open to all artists to have one day, one weekend, and up to two week shows, we free the artists from any curatorial pressures and provide them with a high quality space to put on the best possible shows. To artists, we simply say: “Yes, you can do it here, put on a great show and good luck.” To the community, we say: “Come to the Carrack!” See for yourself, we're located at 111 West Parrish Street, Durham, NC 27701.

So far, the community has supported us and kept the space open entirely through grassroots donations but, as we switch gears and build a program of ever more ambitious exhibits, we need some degree of certainty as to the roof over our heads. We have a fantastic exhibit space in the heart of downtown Durham, help us raise a full twelve months of rent to secure this great space for the artistic community to use!

With rent secured for a full year, we will have a sturdy platform to build upon the existing synergies already underway at the Carrack in a substantial, meaningful manner

Shows so far, since June 2011, and upcoming exhibits:

Nuno Gomes: collage and multimedia - John Wendelbo: digital and sculpture - Belinda Paige Cook: ecclesiastical photography and site specific installation - Franco: visual artist, social activist and slam poetry performance - Group sculpture show with Paris Alexander, Edwin White, Steve Bickley, Ed Walker, Jay Rotberg, John Wendelbo - Steven Silverleaf, Jenny Warburg and Jim Lee: 9/11 memorial show - Katie Frohbose and Guy Hochman: photography - Carlos Mare 139: graffiti and sculpture - Nick Zedd: Cinema of transgression and painting - Catherine Howard: Veil Tease InstallationLiz Wendelbo: video and photography - PoPuP 3: Community Art Show - large scale outdoor projections on Parrish Street... and more ....

Goals:

- to establish a genuine, fluid, organic, both raw and ambitious, rallying point for the artist community in Durham in which artists can gather, grow, and showcase their work.

- to bring in artists, locally and nationally, for one or two week residencies, a time during which artists will 'do what they do' in the context of Durham, and leave the Carrack, Durham and the community with a legacy of their work. We're interested in developing the 'ad hoc' theme for artists visiting us and sharing their experience with us through their specific expression of their art.

- to give a space to artistic organizations to host their events.

By doing this and by being consistent, ambitious and stubborn, as we are, over the next twelve months we will establish an additional hub of creativity and energy downtown, and in doing so, will do our part in revitalizing Parrish Street, a profoundly historical street downtown Durham.

GIFTS FOR DONORS: we know that you are donating to help this space survive and thrive, but we'd like to thank you beyond a mere 'thank you' in our own small way with original artwork by Durham artist, John Wendelbo, in the form of archival inkjet prints on paper as well as on canvas. We hope you enjoy these and we thank you for your support.

'Paths IX' is available as a small ultrachrome K3 (archival) matted print, 5"x7" and 11"x14".

'Preserver and Destroyer, hear oh hear!' is available either as an ultrachrome K3 (archival) matted print on paper (11"x14") or on canvas (18"x24").

THANK YOU FROM ALL @ THE CARRACK MODERN ART FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!
