Update #5: Shipping update and cute picture

Posted on November 23, 2009

Hi everyone!

Here's a picture of our very friendly postal worker who was excited to see so many boxes going out!

All of the natural steel Fire Imps shipped out today via USPS priority mail. You should have them by the end of the week. I also shipped all the 5x7 and 8x10 photos. Those went out priority mail in the US and regular mail for overseas backers.

I am told that the color Imp series will be ready for pickup on Friday, December 4th. I was hoping for much sooner than that, but it will still give them plenty of time to arrive in time for the holidays. I will ship those priority mail as well and will get them all shipped Monday, December 7th.

I did ship a couple Imps from the color series today to those who had already reserved one on Flickr. I've moved the remaining (unclaimed) color Imps that are currently on Flickr to the Legal Defense Fund sale on 1000Markets.com. All the Fire Imps sent to backers will be from the batch currently being coated.

I'll photograph them all before they go and add them to Flickr. If you ordered a single Fire Imp from one of the color series and wish to choose which one I send, you'll be able to do that over the weekend before I ship and I'll post an update when they're live to remind you to pick one.

Thanks!

John

That's so great! I am blown away by your dedication to this project and how fast you are getting these out *while* you work on this big fight with the art thieves! I hope you have ample time to truly enjoy Thanksgiving!

Update #3: Thank You Backers! And some updates.

Posted on November 3, 2009

This has been a fantastically successful project so far and I am really excited to start shipping out the Fire Imps and photos in a few days when the deadline on the project is met.

I went to drop some new sculptures off at Wheelock + Sons Welding yesterday to have them powder coated and discovered that they had had a fire and are temporarily closed. They are working really fast on the building and anticipate being up and running again by the 13th. So, all of the color series will still be able to ship in time for Christmas. I'd prefer to have all the color series done by the original company so that I can be sure of color consistency… plus, I've worked with these guys for years and I know that they do great work.

I'll ship the natural steel series as soon as the project reaches deadline. I'll also ship the sets of 3 or 5 color imps then. Individual color series Imp should ship about November 20th.

If you haven't reserved an Imp Sculpture on Flickr yet, please do so that I know which one you would like (or send me a message here on kickstarter if you would like me to pick one for you).

Also, if you donated at the one dollar level, let me know if there is a twitter name and/or website you would like me to twitter about.

It's great that you reached your goal - I hope it helps with your legal fees, etc. I'm fine with you picking out the Natural Steel Fire Imp for me once the project closes. Thanks!

Update #2: Playing With Fire: The making of the Fire Imp Sculpture Series

Fire Imps are not like sausage… you actually can enjoy knowing how they're made.

Update #1: Fire Imp Sculptures on Parade

Posted on October 18, 2009

Marcie had a great idea while we were shooting the "Making Of" video… She suggested that if we put the sculptures on a merry-go-round, it'd be a great way to show off a selection of them without getting jerky camera moves. We lucked out by finding a merry-go-round on the first try (I wasn't sure they were still allowed on playgrounds any more). I love the way the fall leaves look with the sculptures too!

I began my creative career in writing, spending fifteen years as a poet, writer and performer. In 1995 I switched to sculpture, and have made a full-time living as an artist since 2000. I'm best known for my sculptural Firebowls which have been featured in the NY Times, Craft Magazine, Hearth & Home, Casual Living, The Daily Book of Art, and HGTV.

Because sculpture is an inherently industrial medium, I've become more and more fascinated by the potential for production work and high quality multiples. I've produced several art product lines designed for manufacture, including the Emoodicon Ring and a flat-pack firebowl that assembles without tools or hardware. Now I'm hoping to find ways to simplify and standardize the process of going from idea to finished product.

My podcast, Art Heroes Radio, focuses on business and marketing for artists. I've spoken at Blogworld Expo, SXSW and The World Domination Summit on related topics. As an early pioneer of selling art through blogs and social media, I've consulted with companies like Six Apart, Paypal, 1000 Markets and others to help them improve and build upon tools for ecommerce. I served on the Strategic Advisory Board at 1000 Markets and am launching my own ecommerce/social media platform later this year.
