Update #19: Wrapped Up In The Blues

Posted on July 20, 2011

Hey Kickstarter Supporters:

I'm really excited about my new, all-blues album, "Wrapped Up In The Blues" due for release at the end of August. Here is the album cover. And please have a quick listen to the preview track, "Walk Away" and let me know how you like it. Really. Because I would like to use a few comments in my early press releases to promote the album, so that it's not just me blowing my horn. (Warning: There's a weird bit in the middle I call the traffic jam section).  Best to email me at: jpippus@gmail.com

Thanks!

John

Update #17: "BAG" Official Launch

Posted on September 23, 2010

Buzz Building: One Week In The Life Of "Born A Genius"

Wednesday Sept. 15th, 2010 Official release date of "Born A Genius".

Thursday, Sept. 16th Radio Promoter, Bryon Tosoff teams up with me to select and promote a single from the album to radio stations across Canada and the USA.

Friday, Sept 17th RadioSubmit selects me to be one of the "Featured Artists" on their home page. (Other featured artists include Foghat and The Commodores). KCOR, Kansas City's #1 blues station downloads five songs from the album for airplay. Canoe FM in Haliburton, Ontario does the same.

Saturday Sept. 18th Radio personality Terry David Mulligan plays a cut from "BAG" album on his CKUA show "Mulligan Stew" (right after playing a cut from Elvis Costello!). Some of the other artists on the playlist on this particular show include: Eric Clapton, The Clash, The Rolling Stones, and Los Lobos. If you're known by the company you keep....

Sunday Sept. 19th Earshot Magazine posts a positive review of "Born A Genius" on their website. This is the site that is the hub for Canadian college radio. The review says: "It appears that he has exorcised a few of his demons after the lonely pre-dawn lament of his first album, and he’s got stuff to say." This is the second review of the album. Previously, The Province's Tom Harrison said in his review: "humor and energy might be the album's unifying factors."

Monday Sept. 20th Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) posts a "frank and generous" interview with me about all aspects of getting the new album heard in a sea of releases. The video for the title track, "Born A Genius" is the Featured Video at the SAC home page.

Tuesday Sept. 21st Patrick Zulanov, Music Director at Shore 104.3, emails to say: "We'll wait for the new single you decide on and look forward to the DMDS delivery". NOTE: the first single will be the second track on the album, "Hey Now Hey". CBC radio's "On The Coast" plays a cut from the new album on their afternoon 'drive home' show. In the evening, I play live "in the round" at Shari Ulrich's Bluebird North Series at the Roundhouse in Yaletown to an appreciative audience.

Wednesday, Sept 22nd Alan Cross, Senior Program Director for CORUS Entertainment ,and host of "The Ongoing History of New Music", in an email says: "Watch for posting on the front page of ExploreMusic.com on Monday". Tom Harrison from the Province newspaper says he will write about the first week in the life of "Born A Genius".

So there you have it Team BAG. We've got a little wave started that I continue to push along. A small flame that I whoosh on with tiny breathes. A.. well enough with the metaphors. Thing is, it's not easy to get ANY kind of notice in this crazy indie music biz. So I'm enjoying what success I've had so far. Savoring it, then moving on. Trying to leverage the success that is coming my way.

For the latest on this musical journey, find me on Facebook. Or visit my "news" page at www.johnpippus.com

Thanks all!

John

Update #16: "Oh Winnipeg!" on CBC Radio

Posted on July 18, 2010

Here's a six minute interview that was aired today (Saturday, July 17th) on CBC radio in Manitoba. I talk about growing up in Winnipeg and about my one-man play I'm doing here at the Winnipeg Fringe Fest. The segment includes a live in-studio performance of a song from the play (and the new album), "Jack Knives and Cannonballs").
The run is going well - four shows down, seven to go - the critic from the main newspaper, The Winnipeg Free Press, was at the show tonight. Which could be good, because tonight's audience was the most responsive yet. They were clapping and laughing all over the place, much to my delight. The review will be in tomorrow's paper. Fingers crossed....

Connected as John Pippus (836 friends)

I write, perform, and record songs. Sometimes I write alone, sometimes collaborate. My first full-length CD (This City" released 2009) was deemed a "folk/roots GEM" by SoundProof Magazine. More reviews on my "song" page at my website: http://johnpippus.com/songs.html

I perform solo or with a band. I've played: The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville), The Tractor Tavern (Seattle), Bruxelles Bar (Dublin, Ireland), The Newtown Festival (Wellington, New Zealand), The Vogue Theater (Vancouver, Canada) and the 2008 Steel Bridge Festival (Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin), headlined by Jackson Browne, to name just a few favorite gigs.

An all-female pop group in Portugal, The Max Girls, recorded a co-write of mine last year called "Embrace" (In Portuguese, the song is called "Quero-te Assim"). Their debut album sold 250,000 units. See them perform my song here: http://tinyurl.com/289kum5

I am also a playwright/actor. Last year I wrote and performed a one-man musical memoir called "Oh Winnipeg!". My play won "Pick of the '09 Vancouver Fringe Festival", earned sold-out houses, and rave reviews. I'm performing it again this summer at the Winnipeg Fringe Fest.

Now, I've recorded the tracks for my second album, "Born A Genius". The producer, Adam Bailie, is a young guy with energy and vision. By combining our talents we have come up with a project that I am proud to stand behind and eager to promote. If you like folk/blues laced with studio-driven beats and contemporary sonic surprises, I guarantee you're going to take "Born A Genius" to heart. It's fresh. It's different. It's coming soon!
