About the Delivery Date

Update #21 · Aug 6, 2012 · 15 comments

Hi Kickstarter,

I promised that I would give you the big camera update this week, and I plan to.

Right now I just wanted to give you all a heads up that we will definitely need to push the delivery date on the cameras. I don't know how much yet, we are trying hard to lock down a final date as soon as possible with our new project manager. Sorry this sounds vague, hopefully we will know the new date in the next few days. I wanted to update you now, just in case it takes longer than anticipated.

We will do everything we can to stick to the new date. I sincerely apologize for the delay, and take full responsibility for it and for telling you about it this late in the game. Our initial release date was based upon the camera announced at the time of the Kickstarter launch and I should have pushed the release date when we made changes to the camera. We already knew that we would be at least a couple weeks behind because of this, but I was naively optimistic that we could make the time up somewhere.

This is the new stuff today:

Hi Joe

In general development is going well other than the timing/delays.
In the past months we have built up a good core development team and things are really starting to fall into place and move at a better pace now.

CNC model #3 is in build now so mid-August is the target of having that in hand.
Generally similar in shape to the last CNC proto but with all of the practical details worked out including internal electronics, cabling, heat sinking, structural integrity etc.

We have been buying components so we have a stock of parts for the first build of 100 cameras in parallel with our development.

A quick rendering…

(The image is at the bottom of the page)

Again, I personally apologize for the delay. I hope in the end we will deliver to you a product better than the one you bid on, and in a relatively timely manner. We're in the home stretch here, and while Canada is finishing up things on their end, Elle and I are finishing up stuff on our end--QCing the Blus & DVDs, fine-tuning the box design, writing the user manual, and other loose ends. We'll be there as soon as we can!

As always thank you for your support,    Joe

Matt, thanks for your very compelling argument! We definitely want to add m43 to the lens mount roster! I can't tell you exactly when, but it's definitely in the works, you are right it is a great lens size for S16! Let us get the camera out first, and send us another reminder :)

      Thanks for your support! Joe

Honestly, maybe the biggest factor, at least for me, is if m43 lenses will be able to be used on this. In speaking with you guys via twitter before you guys said that you have a mount in the works, and I URGE you guys to come through with that promise. Micro four thirds glass is excellent glass, make no mistake about it. There are great wide angles made for it that aren't possible in the same pricerange as canon, nikon and such, there are lots of very fast primes in the collection, and optically they are almost all superb, and not to mention compact, and very fitting for a sensor size that the bolex will feature. I just really hope you guys don't shun the m43 community and only want to go with c mount lenses or what have you, and I understand your love of 16mm film, but honestly guys, if you can devolop a way to use m43 glass on the dbolex, you will have a SERIOUS camera on your hands, and the ever increasing community of panasonic gh2 users will happily spend the money to buy your product. Thanks guys :)

Thank you all for your support!
It really means a lot, and we will make you all the best camera we possible can!

Phillip, there will be several record options, but the trigger one will be a momentary switch meaning you need to hold it down, but it won't have a lot of resistance so it will feel very natural to hold it while recording. There will of course be another record button on the back, so if for instance you have taken the handle off you can still record, and that one will operate push once for on and push again for off like a "normal" record button.

      Thank you all again! Joe

I echo Max's sentiments. I rather get a delay date for something that is fucking awesome rather than get something on time that's half assed. Sending positive production vibes your way. Thanks for the updates!

I'm happy to wait a little bit longer for a camera that works. And some of the upgrades that have taken more time have already made this camera better; namely the HDMI output and 24 bit audio. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Good lord, what a sexy camera. Bummer the date is being pushed back. But I can't wait!!!

Sweet - cannot wait to shoot with it. So much so I wore the Digital Bolex T-Shirt (you can kind of see it) when I appeared in my Kickstarter vid for my film (which is being shot on a 60D - I wish we had digital bolex to play with....just saying :) )

...stupid question, but will you need to continuously hold down the trigger to record, or can you just press it once and boom, you're rolling. it looks simple, elegant and well made. willing to wait for the best possible camera, thanks.

Come on Dave, it's a bespoke digital bolex built from the bottom up. With build input from over 100 filmmakers! Did you really think you'd have it in your hand on August the first???? I'm sure you'll be able to sell it on for a profit as soon as you get it....and then buy one of those new DSLR's that are all the same generic build....Good luck Joe, get it right and I will endeavour to be the first to shoot a feature on it...

Well the rendering looks amazing! As Chris said, BMD are behind and they are a huge company. The Digital Bolex, is in my opinion, much more of a filmmakers camera than the BMD, but both are very, very welcome and needed entrants to the market. Well done Joe, Elle & the team.

This is dragging on a long time. The train maybe leaving the station, especially with all the new DSLRs offering HD video for a lot less.

Like this latest rendering looks retro but also has some modern lines. Even blackmagicdesigns is behind their release date so considering your limited resources I think you guys are doing great.
