Indeed! They are strict about the deadline. But we're still in the running here. Time to rally the troops and call friends, family, and financiers everywhere!

I wish you had an extension on the deadline, there is a great Application Developers Alliance privacy road show that would drive your funding conversation!

Thanks Christopher. I'm hoping to chat more with Marc after his presentation. There's lots of good work in this area.

First class idea - clarity provides confidence with both your customers as well as with your employees. Those who say what they do and do what they say, will have a market differentiation. Very happy to see that DPRL and WEF Personal Data Tiger Team have made contact and connected. Glad to support this project.

Dinah,
Thanks for the support and the question. We've been working with a number of legal folks, including Marc Dautlich, Scott David, and Michael Kreiger, as well as working with folks at ISOC and Kantara Initiative.
For the Label, the bulk of the legal language will be provided by the data recipient, just as the packaged goods manufacturer provides the values for the Nutrition Facts label. Once we move to the Standard Information Sharing Agreement, we'll need a lot more heavy lifting on the legal front.
At IIW yesterday, we had a great session with the folks working on the OIX Attribute Exchange. We'll be participating in that conversation to help build out standard legal and technical pieces for the Information Sharing Trust Framework.
The other element we hope will help, especially with the Standard Label, is that we aren't trying to standardize the entire TOS, but rather, we are focused on a standard way to present the essentials regarding the use of my data. It's a simpler subset of the overall relationship, and can be used with current terms on any website that wants to communicate more clearly.

I should say why I think that matters: For businesses to use such a label it will have to be palatable to their own legal advisers. Roadblocks to that kind of approval need to be worked on early in the design process.

This is a very cool idea and I'm glad to hear you'll be working hard on the design side of things to make it very understandable. However, it seems like there's a lot of variation and complexity to TOS documents, even within an organization over time. Could you give an update that talks a little more about the legal team working on this and any organizations with whom you're partnering? If I recall rightly, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has done a lot of work observing TOS agreements around the web and could be an ideal partner.
