Developing
Photography, to me, is a very spiritual art. There is a degree of math and technical prowess associated with operating the dials on the camera and in the ratios of a beautiful composition, but these melt away into the grammar of the act. You learn these things and they become elements of expressing, not of what is itself expressed. Photography is an act of creation that takes place in a fraction of second, and what is recorded is an impossible short instance. It is about readiness, openness, and a willingness to cross the light of the moment with the light of the self.
Right now, and for the past week, I have been developing the 22 rolls of film that I brought back. This is the most exciting and the most anguishing stage of the project. The shooting stage is the first stage, of course, when one slips into the meditative openness that is needed to create. You find opportunity and create opportunity and you manage the way that the camera is wielded as an implement of creation, and you lock it inside a little precious reel. Over time those reels accumulate, and you get to where I am now: unreeling and unraveling, and slowly developing.
So, I say this is the most difficult time of the project. This is when we learn the answer to the most difficult question: "Is my soul still good?" When we have an art form that we have learned to give a direct and confessional access to ourselves and we have done so with success in the past, we take the ability to check up and answer this question periodically, and we need to know that answer as a deep and motivating force in our life.
So, here's to the sheets of developed film still waiting to be scanned, and to the three remaining rolls on my counter, and the 100 secrets left, kept between them.
