First, this is one of the last Kickstarter updates you'll likely get from us. But hold those tears in, it's because we're moving to a better updating system, and we're also adding a new payment system and on-ramp to LOVELAND that will make the experience of inchvesting much more fun and immediate.

Until then, there are mere hours left on what may be the second to last Kickstarter round for LOVELAND, and it still needs a little loving to hit its goal. You'll also notice there are now Badge listings on your profile. If you're familiar with http://foursquare.com then you know how badges work. Basically, you can earn badges for doing things on the website like saying hi to your neighbors, connecting to Facebook, inchvesting in multiple properties, and other surprises, and also for doing things in the big bad real world like living in Detroit, visiting the property, building something on your property, and other things. The badge images are coming soon, but for right now enjoy the beautiful standard font! ;)

☛ We had a meeting with The Villages Community Development Corporation last week (Plymouth is in the East Village area of Detroit) which was very encouraging as regards scaling LOVELAND up in the future. Imagine that the property map you log into on the website wasn’t only for inches, but whole neighborhoods or whole cities. We’re going to meet again to see if maybe we can share some tools and data.

☛ Maybe we’ll try one out with the Russell Industrial Center first. They kindly sent over their floor plan and occupant map to us today. The RIC suffers from the same problem that a lot of communities do: How the heck do I know who’s here that I might like to meet or collaborate with, and how can we talk about what’s going on around us? Almost like a social network for space. Maybe we can use this as a real life test case, starting with the floor that LOVELAND’s studio is on.

☛ We’re also starting to look seriously at grants and alternative forms of funding for the project. It’s become hard enough paying for everything we need to, let alone want to. Greetings inchvestors! Hello from the interzone between LOVELAND seasons 1 and 2, and also from New Jersey, an interzone of its own, where I'm sitting on the couch of my parents' house after visiting for my mom's birthday.

Did you know Detroit has an unspoken past? A tiny, tiny, haunted, tiny past of haunted micro real estate? Well it does. The ghost inches are baaa-aaack, and they want to be caught so a new bridge can be built! : )

In addition to the birthday, I'm on the road for meetings and working with friends in different cities. So far LOVELAND has been entirely funded by inchvestor love and dollars. Personally, I continue having the time of my life working on this for you. I'm excited, scared, inspired, and exhausted by turn, which is at should be. All this is...new, and we're doing it David style, not Goliath style, with naught but a slingshot full of inches. I enjoy picturing the not-too-distant future where the system is really up and running and we look back at this stage fondly. The quaint times! Now, what to expect. When we hit 10K, that will conclude LOVELAND season 1: the earliest stage of figuring this all out, exploring directions, welcoming LOVELAND's earliest pioneers (that would be you! :)) and testing the inchvestment model.

Season 2 will begin in the spring and I couldn't be more excited about it. What's new? Well, your inches will be physically installed and visitable. Hoorah! There will be a fresh new website with new map features to see and interact with your space online, a new side story-line, AND! We'll be coming out with 5 LOVELAND grants to support projects in Detroit, so season 2 will be about sharing new inchvestment money with people doing cool and important things in the city.

LOVELAND itself has been Kickstarted by all of you, and now it's time for it to start Kickstarting other things.

Exciting news: There are only 1,000 inches left in LOVELAND's first Plymouth colony (see the pic, bursting at the seams) and we're getting ready to move outdoors with newfunsuperexcitment in the spring.

I just posted what I think will be the last Kickstarter round here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jerry/loveland-round-11 . Double down if you'd like to and share it with friends however floats your inch boats. We can really use the energy and support to finish this off right!

Here's what's happening next: When we hit this next thousand inches http://makeloveland.com is going into mini-hibernation before reopening by spring with a new look, new features, a fully realized Plymouth for you, and a next property. General level up-ness. Think of it as the end of season 1 and the start of season 2. History made, experience gained, fresh starts, bigger bangs.

We'll also be scaling up the team to work through some of the logistical bottlenecks like mailing out the remaining deeds and shirts and following up on leeds, as well as focusing on LOVELAND special ops like Project Lemon Battery (property camera) and Project Pico Mover (property robot) and project partnerships.

Follow at your own speed. It's the '90s. You have options.

We're approaching 7,500 inches out of the first 10,000 from over 400 people which you can see on the inchvestor map: http://makeloveland.com/inchvestors . Aside from making sure certain monthly goals are met, I've been letting progress percolate organically to maximize self-selection and diversity of inchvestors. But! Heads up there's really not that much space left in the first Plymouth colony so if you'd like more space or to get your friends in, there won't be room in the pioneer manger forever.

To answer the question of when can you start incheracting with your property, there are 2 main factors: first, until we reach the 10,000th inch, the property lines will continue to move around on the map. Once we do they'll freeze into place and your holdings will be stable. Second, I'll be installing a nice grid on the property so that your space will be clearly defined. I'm not sure if you've heard this one before, but "it's so cold in the D" right now, and my plan is to work on that in the studio over the winter and situate the grid in the very early spring.

Now some really big news that’s transformative for your inchvestments and the project as a whole. When the project hits its 10,000th inch, everything is going to scale up to square feet. Your original inchvestment will remain unaffected and the Plymouth colony of 10,000 square inches will still move outdoors and exist in its original square inch grid form, but, as an added reward and return on your inchvestment you will also receive the same number of square feet as you have square inches. That’s a 144x return! :)

You’ll have to bear with me while I set these new properties up, but effectively, upon reaching 10,000, if you have 12 square inches now, you’ll also have an additional 12 square feet. If you have 144 square inches you’ll also have an additional 144 square feet, etc etc. Suffice it to say this is a radical leap in terms of possibilities for developing your land. Mailboxes, gardens, solar power, benches, sheds, rocket ships(?), etc etc etc all become feasible.

Also after this round we'll be more than 1/2 way through the Plymouth colony, with a real property to move into, and it's time to open up to the world more and make some changes that reflect that.

Thank you all so much for being a part of the Kickstarting process. Over the last few months...well, I'll spare you the speech. It's been awesome. And you know me, I'm crazy enough to keep doing this until it's a phenomenon far beyond my control where you'll all be saying, "ZOMG I was in LOVELAND back when it was on Kickstarter! I was IN PLYMOUTH!!!" And then we will all clink our glasses to history and drink them down to the road ahead.

While Plymouth has about 5,000 inches to go I've been working on the next stage, level 2, where your inchvestments will be featured and take on new life. The premise I'm working on is an online battle game against a demon from Zug Island that will transform real land in Detroit inch by inch and all of you who've gotten in early will be featured.
