Variations on an origin story (GO! GO! Rokko Chan unlocked)

Update #3 · Jun 13, 2012 · comment

The Nubuwo Summer Bundle is currently 65% funded.  To mark the occasion, two new Rokko Chan Soundtracks arrangements have been unlocked on the project's Bandcamp page.

Last time we listened to three Volcano Man themes by artists based in Japan, the United States and Sweden.  Here we'll take a look at the animated intro background music  "GO GO Rokko Chan," by musicians from Japan, Canada and Brazil.

The FMV sequence at the start of the game informs us that Dr Mad has masterminded a rebellion among robots and that Rokko Chan has arrived on the scene just in time to potentially set things right.  The intro theme by Asagen is spread out over two separate music tracks on the Rokko Chan soundtrack album.  However, since the transition between the two songs is hardly noticeable while playing, it was thought that if they were arranged by separate artists, the transition between the two might be jarring.

Bryface of Vancouver offers a chippy variation on the introductory theme.  Known for his use of the KORG DS-10 synthesizer, featured on his album how to dodge lasers, here he is utilizing Little Sound DJ for the Nintendo Game Boy.  The stylistic difference between the two portable game console instruments can be sampled in multiple videos uploaded to the Bryface YouTube zone.

Matheus Manente of São Paulo has arranged music for every game cover compilations that Nubuwo has helped organize.  Namely, his pieces can be found on IWADON, Hydorah Arranged Tracks, Splatterhouse Butchered by Various Artists and Videogame Music in Context.  Here his guitar arrangement contains several unique phrases, particularly at the beginning of the piece, that coincidentally complement Bryface's chip remix.  Both tracks were arranged independently and represent individual reinterpretations of "GO! GO! Rokko Chan!"
