I want to document the abandoned ghost island Qullissat, Greenland. My mom grew up on Qullissat & there’s a 40-year jubilee in July.
Qullissat is a small island off the west coast in Greenland (just west of Ilulissat). It was formed in 1924 as a coal mining town and had about 1200 residents. In 1972 the government determined that Qullissat was no longer profitable and it was decided to close down the town. The residents had to pack their belongings and leave the island immediately. It is now a ghost island with abandoned buildings and homes.
My mom was born on Qullissat and it has been a long dream of mine to travel to the island to document it as well as finding the home my mom grew up in. I have traveled to Greenland twice; once when I was eleven and once as a twenty year old but I never made it out to the island.

On July 6th, 2012 there is a 40-year jubilee to celebrate the island and it would be the perfect time to travel there to document the town. Since the town is closed, there is no regular boat traffic out to Qullissat so a boat has to be chartered for the four hour trip and visitors have to stay overnight in tents.
