About this project
What is the project?
"SHOOT BANG KILL" is a short film by photographer/writer/director Jelani Memory. Set in a nameless city where a normal day goes from bad to worse, the "Shoot Bang Kill" narrative is an action/mystery/dark comedy with tightly woven interplay between a host of intriguing yet treacherous characters. When the youngest son of a powerful crime boss steals an irreplaceable item from his father, the theft sets off a chain of deadly actions and reactions as an ensemble of assassins pursue the item they're dying to kill for.
How is our project different?
As a backer of "Shoot Bang Kill", take a front row seat as we invite you to participate in the filmmaking process. No doubt there will be obstacles – seen and unforeseen – but with the help of our backers, we'll be ready for battle. Whether to spectate, learn, or jeer...come along for the ride. Get all the angles on how we do what we do – and more importantly – how your pledge is being utilized.
What's the film going to be like?
As a proof of concept for recruiting cast, crew, and backers, we shot and edited a few vignettes of "Shoot Bang Kill" on our own dime. See below for the first installment in a series of 'glimpses' into the world of "Shoot Bang Kill". [note: Explicit Language]
"Shoot Bang Kill": Vignette 1
Stay tuned for more clips to be released throughout the course of the campaign. Consider these vignettes a prologue of sorts – a sampling of elements and styles that have influenced the development of the script and provide a glimpse into what is to come.

Who's making ShootBangKill?
Jelani Memory: Writer/Director
Jelani Memory is a Photographer/Filmmaker out of Portland Oregon. Cutting his teeth on drawing as a kid, Jelani's initial artistic dream was to draw comic books someday. That dream graduated to wanting to design sneakers and at the end of his college career (Religious studies) he fell in love with both photography and film and pursued them as a profession. Jelani is a story teller at heart and whether it is in motion or in a single frame, he'll keep on telling them. Jelani currently resides in the great city of Portland, Oregon with his lovely wife Lavenda and their daughter Ella.
To see some samples of Jelani's recent work, go ahead and take a few minutes to follow these links: short film | music video | comedy sketch | still photography
Lara Cuddy: Producer/Production Manager
After getting a foothold in production as a set dresser and art director for industrial and corporate projects, Lara's list of credits has grown to include production management and line producing for independent short and feature film projects. Most recent projects include partnerships with Polluted Pictures and Wooden Frame Productions (Wake Before I Die, The Weather Outside, Cell Count) and Dirty River Media (Puerile). A long-time doodler, amateur photographer, and artist, Lara believes the highest challenge in creative work lies in seeing the true possibilities in the crazy world around us.
Todd Robinson: Producer/1st AD
Todd has known from an early age that a career in entertainment was his future. His filmmaking journey began in the sixth grade, with his father’s Super 8mm camera. In high school, he made films about a team of self-trained young ninjas, starring himself, his brother, and a few of the kids who lived near them in Southern California. Following a hitch in the Navy and a few years making music, Todd worked in the grip and electric department on several short films and commercials, where he fell in love with the process. Over the next several years, he worked in just about every department on dozens of film/video projects in Portland and LA, gaining the necessary experience and insight for working as an Assistant Director and Producer. Recently, in addition to working fairly regularly as a character actor, Todd has AD’d four feature films for the Brothers Freeman, and with longtime friend and collaborator Ethan Black, is currently developing a feature-length comedy entitled Chick Magnets.
What will the funding be used for?
Okay, here's a little jargon: our pledge goal is based on a working production cost estimate, which is arrived at via a breakdown of the shooting script. In other words: we ask ourselves what elements are essential to shoot the project and how affordably can we secure them?
Now that the jargon is out of the way, it's time for Show & Tell:

The bottom line: Kickstarter funds will be used to 1) pay and feed our talented, experienced, and professional cast and crew and 2) cover costs for equipment rentals, location rentals, production design, permits, post-production, original score and sound design.
When will the project see the light of day?
The script is nearly finalized, creative development is in full swing, and we are knee-deep in pre-production. The shoot is slated for seven days in September 2011, post-production is scheduled for Sept-Nov 2011, followed by a strategic marketing phase (promotion, festivals, and screenings).
Why Kickstarter?
It's simple. We have a project we believe in and we want you to join us in making it a reality. We promise to work hard. We promise to have fun. We promise to make something that we can all be proud of. Stay looped in, and we'll keep you up to speed every step of the way.
How can I help spread the word?
Shout it from the rooftops. Tell your friends about this project and encourage them to join our crew. Pass it along. Repost. Tweet. Embed. Link to us from anywhere and everywhere. Twitter | Facebook | SBK Site
What can I do right now?
Back us. It only takes a few minutes to pledge. And you can always come back and add more to your pledge if you want to. Pledge now!
Don't Forget
We need you. And we're stoked that your interest has gotten you (to read) this far. The truth is, we won't be able to make this film unless we reach our funding goal. And you know as well as we do: we can't reach our goal without the backing of folks like you.
Each backer level from $25 and up, includes all the previous backer level rewards. [Screenings and wrap party events do not include travel or accommodations.]

Yes, we believe we can. On the financial end, we've done the hard work figuring out our costs, planning a production and post-production schedule, and locking in all the folks necessary to get this project on the screen. On the creative side of things, it would bore you to hear how many time's we've revised the script, or how many hours we've met to discuss the smallest details. The point is, we've done our homework and now we're ready to bring the creative and financial together with your help. Take a closer look. We are primed to impress.

See section above ("What will the funding be used for?") for a high-level breakdown of the estimated production costs. However, if you are a stickler and would like more of the gory details, here is our line-item budget. That's right. Straight up. Each and every line item.

Now, who ever said you never get what you ask for?

A few things. 1. Getting this film made. It should go without saying, but this film won't get made unless people like you support it. 2. Paying a fair rate. We don't believe in asking folks like you for money to create something that we're asking others to work on for free. From the Gaffer to the background actors to the 1st AD, everyone will get paid fairly for their time. 3. Kickstarting a budding filmmaker's career. Jelani Memory is an ambitious guy. His dream is to write and direct films for a living. By supporting this project, you're giving him the kick-in-the-pants he needs to start making that happen. (Side note: Jelani won't be getting paid. For him, it's compensation enough to have his project made).

World domination...just kidding. For the finished film: first it will go out to film festivals, second it will make its way to the web, and third it will live on DVD into the great beyond. For the filmmakers and cast and crew: we want this project to open new opportunities for them to make bigger and better films. Hmm. I guess that does sound a little like world domination...

As it stands right now, we plan to shoot on the well known RED One camera. However, there may be some exciting developments on this front, so stay tuned for more updates. Here's a hint: there's a fancy new camera just released by RED (www.red.com) that we may (just may) get to shoot on. It'll be EPIC if we get the chance to do so. Wink wink.

Unfortunately no, the VIP invites do not include travel or accommodations. "Lean and Mean" is a rule we live by.
