About this project

After awarding the acclaimed Jazz for Peace Empowerment Grant to the Empaash Oloorienito Conservancy Trust in the Mara region of Kenya, Africa; World Renowned Jazz Artist  Rick DellaRatta learned first hand of problems there that can permanently effect our entire worlds ecosystem, and was asked by everyone from the Prime Minister of Kenya to the Kenya Wildlife Service to the culturally rich and indigenous Maasai people themselves to create as much awareness as possible upon his return to the US.

He has decided to keep his promise by making this fascinatingly informative, educational, artistic yet also entertaining film.

As a result of this promise we are making a documentary about the Maasai Mara of Kenya, Africa. The objective of this documentary is to educate people about this amazing region of Africa and how its sustainability and success or failure can have an impact on the rest of the world. Via footage that we have taken from our two concerts trips there over the past year along with interviews and information we have gathered, we can now offer an insight into the land, the culture, the wildlife and the people while at the same time expose as well as educate viewers about the problems and possible solutions to saving "One of the Seven Great Wonders of the World".

Funds will be used for production costs and to assemble the footage into a complete full length documentary which fully achieves the above goals. Should we exceed our funding goal we will be able to EXCEED these goals already listed with further interviews, footage and additional production costs that we had not budgeted as well as obtain the promotion and distribution to enable this movie to reach the worldwide audience that it deserves.

FAQ

  • This project has ALREADY received backing from numerous sources (see additional video example) enabling much of the heavy lifting to be completed including two trips to Kenya Africa, interviews, concert footage and more. We have already climbed the majority of this mountain and we just need your help  for the final push to the summit (and beyond). We are excited to have this  opportunity to invite people like you that might already be proud of our work to actually play a valuable role in the creative process  by choosing one of our donor/reward options knowing that because of you this incredible dream and all of the positive things that will come from it in the future has become a reality.

However what is truly amazing about this award is the sponsoring  partnership we have as part of our “Jazz for Peace-United Nations Celebration” with our Foundation’s  Empowerment Tree Grant Program  to provide the complete Event Staffing and the amazing perks that come with it (http://www.jazzforpeace.org/10) that have led to our 800 previous events from the United Nations in New York City to the event in Kenya that you just saw for your very own eyes,  along with Tax Deductible incentives to add even MORE frosting to this enormously profitable “sustainable  fundraising” cake!

  • There are numerous problems which must be addressed simultaneously.

This is because one problem directly impacts another.

    1. Saving the Mara River -  Just a few days ago (Jan. 22) 60 minutes ONCE AGAIN did a one hour special on this!

Here is the 60 minutes link:

    http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7396058n&tag=contentMain;cbsCarousel

    2. Protecting the wildlife.

Dickson Okaelo, featured in the 60 minutes piece above, is also featured in the Jazz for Peace Film. Although the interview he gave to Jazz for Peace in his meeting with me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHbs8MecHXQ) offers much more insight into the Wildlife concerns.

    3. Preserving the land, the culture, and the way of life of the indigenous Maasai people.

There has been severe drought and the LifeFilta product that I am a spokesperson for can save many lives there. Here is some more information on that from this informative article by the BBC World News: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8057316.stm

These three things are very intertwined.

For example if the river continues to dry up or become polluted it will probably destroy the wildlife and the people.

However at the bottom of this KICKSTARTER page are three links that all say www.jazzforpeace.org yet are very different and each one offers a very special insight that is far beyond anything that I could ever put into words.

    1. The first link (located third up from the bottom) is a summary of the entire experience written by Maasai Warrior and Representative of the Empaash Oloorienito Conservancy Paul Kilelu:

    Received: March 22, 2011
The concert was attended by people of all backgrounds - politicians, conservationists, musicians, tour operators, students, government officials and the landowners of EOC. Mr. Gideon Konchela, the former Minister for Immigration, opened the ceremony.

On our journey the next day to the upper Mara we witnessed activity that is seriously incompatible with the existing natural ecosystem.

According to Mr. Wilson Korrir, Assistant Director- Kenya Wildlife Service, the Jazz for Peace concept of empowerment was the best at this time when conservation of wildlife and the environment is in critical need. Mr. Korrir contributed many ideas on how the Jazz for Peace empowerment concept can be used to save our critical ecosystem in many parts of Kenya.

The ceremony uniting Rick with the Maasai people marked a new beginning, a new lease on the life of caring for wildlife in the area.
Paul Kilelu, Empaash Oloorienito Conservancy, Kenya, Africa

          2.  A letter I received from Rt. Hon. Raila A. Odinga – Prime Minister of The Republic of Kenya

    Received: March 10, 2011
Dear Rick,...my most sincere appreciation for selecting Nairobi as a venue for your concert...drawing both local and international attention to the Empaash Oloorienito Conservancy Trust in its efforts to conserve the Maasai Mara...I commend your organization for your committment to this noble cause.
    Raila Odinga, Prime Minister, Kenya

    3. Our far reaching Empowerment Grant Info Link which in the past few weeks alone has attracted applicants from New Zealand, Hawaii, Brooklyn, Chile, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Tulsa, the Phillipines and yes, Kenya to do exactly what you just saw in this documentary and will see a whole lot more of as soon as we get this project finished and onto your video screen.

    http://www.jazzforpeace.org/grantinfo

It is this link which draws these amazing people and organizations from all over the country and the world giving me the opportunity to do everything I can to be “part of the solution”.

I would like to thank all of our Empowerment Grant recipients for their incredible dedication to collectively make our world a better place and for honoring me with the opportunity to help them and be a part of it!

    Sincerely,

Rick DellaRatta – Founder – Jazz for Peace

About Rick DellaRatta and Jazz for Peace™:
Considered “One of the most significant cultural events of our time!”, this Mainstream/Latin/Brazilian act has built a reputation as "One of the worlds greatest Jazz performers!"

Having performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Paquito D' Rivera, Rick DellaRatta is now considered by many to be one of the finest Singer/Pianists performing today and one of only a handful of Jazz Artists who can make a successful musical presentation to a large audience without having to abandon the true art form of Jazz. His unique and original piano playing and composing has been compared in print to Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson and Thelonius Monk while his signature vocal sound and style has been likened to Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Joao Gilberto, Ivan Lins, Michael Franks and Antonio Carlos Jobim. His current "Rick DellaRatta and Jazz for Peace World Tour" has included historic performances in the US, Europe, Africa and Brazil and his landmark Jazz for Peace concert at the United Nations in New York in 2002 uniting Israeli, Palestinian and American musicians in concert is now considered "one of the most significant cultural events of our time!"
