Jay Very is a transgender-identified person in his late 20s who leads an unconventional lifestyle. Jay studied performance art and installation in his undergraduate degree and focused on self- portraiture. He has an educational background in counseling and art therapy and has experience in various types of clinical and professional work. In 2010, Jay was a recipient of Windy City Times 30 most influential people under 30 Award.
Jay uses his body as a social experiment by changing his appearance to best adapt to his current situation. During the time that his identity evolved he performed 24-7 as several different characters. During these times of flux he experienced social exclusion and disparities of acceptable behavior attributed to individuals based on the larger constructs of gender.
Despite his degrees and work history, sex work proved to be the most financially lucrative avenue for paying back his student loans while providing him with the luxury of time to develop creative projects. He maintained a shifting career as a sex worker while he experienced the physical and emotional shifts that occur when undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy.
During this time Jay attempted to see therapists for his own self care but he found that they were not culturally competent in practicing with non-monogamous, transgender, queer and kinky sex workers. Because of this he felt it was more therapeutically beneficial to take a DIY approach to mental health. He began documenting and reflecting on pressures from society, desires around BDSM, non-monogamy and his evolving identities through the private art mediums of video and self portraiture.
Jay is now, collaboratively, bringing this video diary out of the closet. Inspired by photographer, Cindy Sherman, his video diaries and self-portrait series document how he moved through space like a chameleon. The footage documents what happens when worlds collide, identities have to be hidden away or terminated and interpersonal relationships end or evolve. The funds raised will be used for post production and promotion of this movie.
