What in the world are you doing?
Begging strangers for money until I have enough to record, package, and promote a new record! Kickstarter.com seemed like a great place to start. Kickstarter assists creative people in their endeavors by providing a simple way for projects to gain traction through an online pledge system. Simply put, you fund my project, and I send you neat stuff in return.
What will the record sound like?
A schizophrenic collection of avant-pop songs set before, during, and after the Apocalypse. Ukuleles in 7/8. Stylophone fugues. Mellotron washes. Analog synthesizers. Yelping. Screeching. Did I mention the seventeen minute song cycle?
Where exactly is the money going?!
The entire minimum amount, $1,800, will go towards the recording, mixing, and mastering of the album. My band is made up entirely of friends who are generously donating their time and skills, so any funds exceeding the exact end cost (after replication and packaging) will be split up among them.
Here's a breakdown:
$1,800 = The basics. Recording, Mixing, Mastering, and minor online distribution. Cheap duplication with jewel case and single page insert.
$2,200 = Allows for a limited run professional CD pressing with an actual booklet instead of an insert.
$2,700 = I'll be able to properly promote the album, including interviews, reviews, and advertisements. The musicians helping me out will get almost everything above this level.
$1,000,000 = If I somehow get an incredible surplus of cash, I'll find a tailor and get a costume made so I can reverently copy Peter Gabriel in his glory days.
Note: I know I put the wrong end date in the video. Whoops. :(
Note 2: Can't edit it now, but the $12 pixel art portrait reward isn't included at higher levels. However, if you choose the drawing reward you can substitute it for pixel art if you want.
Project location: Homeland, FL
Exclusive download of the album before it's official release, and access to all video updates.
Everything from the $5 dollar level, and I'll create a pixel art portrait of you! Perfect for your Facebook profile picture or a forum avatar.
Everything above, and a signed physical copy of the album before it's official release.
Everything above, and a flash drive packed with all fourteen of my previous releases, along with a few never before heard tracks. That's about nine mind-blowing hours of music.
Everything above, and a colorful drawing of anything your heart desires. You can substitute this for pixel art if you wish. No vulgar or profane requests please.
Everything above, and I'll record an original short song about anything you want. This won't be some cheap Youtube performance, I'll actually produce it and send you the MP3 file. Your name will appear in the thank you section of the CD booklet for any pledge of $100 or higher.
Everything from the $70 level and down, and I'll create a small Super Nintendo-esque computer game about whatever you want. This will include original pixel art and background music, all by me.
Everything from the $70 level and down, and I'll write you a 15 minute EP of music. It can either be one really long song, or a few smaller tracks. You decide! I'll also send you any future releases of mine for no charge.
Everything from the $100 level and down, PLUS I will come to your place and perform a one man show in your living room. If not that, I'm sure we could find something else to do. Heck, maybe I'll even bring some of my equipment and we'll record a song at your place. I'll also send you any future releases of mine for no charge.
I will write you twenty minutes of music using your lyrics or ideas, design CD art, get it pressed, and fly to wherever you are to perform it in it's entirety. If I can manage I'll arrange to have a band with me. You'll have to give me some extra time for this one, but I will do it.

Jay Tholen is an artist and musician from a rural unincorporated town in Florida. His style, though grounded in the realm of electronic music, borrows many elements from the prog/art rock movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Consequently, the warm analog tones of vintage samplers and synthesizers permeate his discography. Ever submissive to his inner nerd, Jay never hesitates to include throwbacks to whatever dorky musician/film/book he is currently enamored with.
