What Is 'Hey, Shu!'?
Hey, Shu! is a mobile (iOS and Android) game about rolling, bouncing and gardening! You play as Shu, a little ball of happiness determined to bring life back to a barren planet. Your garden grows in real time, and the game is meant to be a relaxing way to spend a few free minutes each day.
Why not have a listen to the theme song while you browse the rest of the page?
As you bring back life to the barren planet, you'll discover the relics of an ancient civilisation, some of which are machines that can be restored to operation, and some of which are mysteries. How do these machines affect the ecosystem of the planet? What happened long ago on this world? And what exactly is Shu anyhow? You'll have to stay tuned and play the game to find out :)
How Does Shu Control the Garden?
For starters, wherever Shu rolls, she nourishes the soil:
She can also collect blossoms from mature plants and can release their seeds elsewhere in the world to grow new plants:
Finally, Shu will be able to eat extra blossoms and even whole plants to charge up her special power, which allows speeding up plant growth.
How Will the Ecosystem Work?
We're still working out the details, but Hey, Shu! will include a simplified ecosystem where your role will be to seed new plants and add nourishment to the soil when needed to help things along.
Different plant types will contribute different elements to the atmosphere, which must be kept in balance for the atmosphere to properly nourish the soil. The more balanced your garden, the more stable the overall ecosystem will be.
What Do You Mean, "Real Time"?
Time passes in Hey, Shu! just like in the real world. When it's night in real life, it's night for Shu. As a real-life day goes by, your virtual plants will become a day older. Just as a real garden needs tending every so often, Hey Shu! is designed for you to play regularly in small doses to keep your plants healthy and growing strong. (And if you are absent for a bit, don't panic — Shu is a forgiving game and you'll soon be able to nurture things back to health!)
In Hey, Shu!, every plant is different. Through the magic of something we in the gaming world call "procedurally generated content" every tree and bush branches and grows in a unique way. Why go to all that trouble? Well, because we think it's pretty neat and because we feel this is an important aspect of nature which we wanted to capture.
How Far Along Is the Game?
The game is currently in alpha, which means the core mechanics are pretty much there, but it's not yet a complete experience and needs loads more polish.
Although there is a ways to go, you can get a feel for the game from the following teaser trailer and screenshots:

Kickstarter is a great way for small projects to gain funding because a lot of people can donate just a little and make a world of difference. Hey, Shu! has so far been funded out of pocket by the two-person team making it, but we can only keep that up for so long. Your donation will mean that we can continue working on Shu until it's really in a place we're happy with.
Who Is This Game For?
Pretty much anyone! Hey, Shu! is kid- and adult-friendly, and offers a low-pressure experience you can play whenever. At home? Of course! On the train? You betcha! Out in the (real-life) garden? Why not! At the office? We won't tell anyone!
If you sometimes feel like rolling in the grass but are worried about cracking the screen on your smart-phone, then Hey, Shu! is the game for you!
What Do I Get for Backing This Project?
As a backer, you can receive a variety of rewards depending on how much you pledge. At the $5 tier and up you will get access to the full game content on iOS and Android (Google Play), using an in-game unlock code. And if you are on Android you will also get a complete DRM-free copy (non-Google-Play) with all the content pre-unlocked if you prefer to use that.
Note: Initially we were only offering the DRM-free Android version, but have investigated a method for unlocking content in all versions, so now you'll get access to the full game no matter what!
We're also offering the official soundtrack, a digital retrospective booklet of concept and prototype work, the chance to get your name in the game, and some really awesome Shu plushies by Nappin' Kraken (www.nappinkraken.com):

Where's My Money Going?
The majority of the pledge money from backers will go straight to making the game. The game is currently in alpha and there is lots left to do. We live pretty cheap, but need your help to get us to the finish line with Shu!
Here's a break-down of where you can expect your pledge to go:
Can I Help in Other Ways?
Absolutely! Beyond backing the project the best thing you can do is help us spread the word! Although we've worked on a variety of projects and know some cool people in the industry, truthfully our strengths aren't in networking and self-promotion. We try, but any little bit of exposure you can bring helps. Tweet about it. Shout about it. Tell that Candy-Crush-addicted friend that they can get in on the ground floor with something so much cooler :) Point them to this page. Stand on a street corner with a potted plant and a home-made Shu costume. Anything, really!
What If You Exceed the Goal?
That'd be cool, right? Suffice it to say that we're focused on the core game for iOS and Android right now, but if we happen to be able to raise more than the target funds, we've got a few additional goals in mind, such as:
- more languages supported
- added features such as GameCentre and Google Play achievements
- more platforms supported such as Windows Phone, Ouya, PC/Mac, etc.
Backers are strongly encouraged to post comments on which of these things they think deserves the highest priority.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Hey, Shu! is currently in an alpha state and although many core features are present there is a lot left to do. Delays are possible, but we are expecting to release Shu early in 2014,
The in-app purchases (IAPs) are still in flux because the core game is still being finalised. But one example we're working on is a meteorite which crashes down onto your planet, granting Shu special powers such as the ability to make hybrid plants. The intention of our IAPs is to extend the existing game for those who dig it, rather than short-circuiting the game or making you feel punished for only playing the free content.
Initially, we offered only the Android version (non-Google-Play) because of technical restrictions on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
However, we're pleased to announce that we've found a work-around and can now offer all the content of the game to both iOS and Android users. You'll get an unlock code to use in the game (which is a free download) which will open up all the content.
We're building Hey, Shu! with the Unity engine (http://unity3d.com/), which lets us support multiple platforms quite easily, and affords us the power of .NET.
We've also made good use of the 2D graphic add-ons 2D Toolkit (http://www.unikronsoftware.com/2dtoolkit/) for sprites, NGUI (http://www.tasharen.com/…) for UI elements, and finally Vectrosity (http://starscenesoftware.com/vectrosity.html) just for Shu's stretchy-curvy tail :)
We hope to publish some techy videos on the making of the game in the near future.
The funding goal for this Kickstarter will get us onto Android and iOS in early 2014, and we can't promise support for more platforms within that scope.
BUT, we're building on the Unity engine, which supports basically everything under the sun (including the newly-released PS4 and XBone), and we happen to know for a fact that Shu controls nicely with a controller or keyboard because that's what we use in the editor! :) There are lots of little considerations, though, including the need for hardware and licensing, which means porting will still take time and money.
So, IF we can surpass the funding goal there is a very real chance of hitting more platforms. We don't have specific stretch goals yet, but if the campaign starts taking off we'll definitely start solidifying those plans and take backer feedback into account for what platforms should be a priority.
If you want Shu on a different platform, your best bet is to back us and help us spread the word! Don't wait until the last minute!
The game will support English and Japanese at launch.
Other languages may come later if time and funding allow.
