About this project
Primarily filmed in the summer of 2009 (and currently in Post-Production), Of Castles and Crepes documents an expedition to 45 castles (and 38 culturally important places) around France. The castles were chosen from those visited on previous expeditions and selected based on their geographical, historical, and cultural significance with the goal of giving the viewers the widest possible vision of France. The film is part history, photo essay, travelogue, and cultural expose in order to entice the viewers to learn more and to visit France for themselves. The film is in English, however some interviews are in French with English subtitles. The final film will be screened locally, produced and distributed on DVD, and made available for viewing online.
I would gratefully like to thank the Maison Française de Cleveland Fund for their generosity in support of the film.
Financing of the project will go to:
- Pickup Shots and Re-shoots
- Editing/Post Production Costs
- Script Rewrite Costs
- Translation and transcription services of French Interviews
FAQ

On our last trip to France we not only visited but go to stay at several castles and were able to interview the proprietors of them. At one place the owner brought us a local historian who spoke to us for some time (in French). We want to be able to incorporate some of these interviews into the final project!
-
Yes and yes. On the last trip we got a lot of great footage and some truly amazing photographs but we found we need to go back to some of the castles to get some reshoots. When we go back we intend to post daily updates!
-
Right now I have 2 others on board with me. One is a professional video editor and the other is a professional writer (who is also coming along as part of the camera crew). The smaller the crew the easier the trip. (Fewer cats to herd)

I am a photographer! On these trips I come back with literally thousands of photographs. The final video will incorporate many of those photos as well.
-
Over 350, all around the world.

I should probably make this the first question as it gets asked most often.
Trust me - you really don't want to! I only make it look fun! I never linger very long and when there is daylight we are shooting! On the last 2 expeditions we drove 4000 miles in 21 days each trip! -
On one level it is intended to be a fun and educational way for us to travel together around the world. But I also hope to really inspire others to have their own cultural adventures! I have been doing this for over a decade and as I travel to new places I am always amazed at what I find and its not enough to find it but to bring it home and share it as well!
