Two Alabama students will document with multimedia projects an internship with Stanley Nelson and the Civil Rights Cold Case Project.
My name is Jared Lovett, and I'm a journalism major at the University of Alabama. This summer, a classmate and I are doing an unpaid internship with Stanley Nelson, the editor of the Concordia Sentinel in Ferriday, Louisiana, and a member of the Civil Rights Cold Case Project.
We need your help to do it.
Stanley, the 2011 winner of the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism and a finalist for this year's Pulitzer Prize in local journalism, has written scores of stories in hopes of finding out the truth about the unsolved murder of Frank Morris.
In December, 1964, Morris was trapped inside his shoe shop while it was set on fire by a group of white men. Like many racially motivated killings during that time, Morris’s case was not adequately investigated at the time. It remains unsolved.
Because of the work that Stanley and other reporters, editors, filmmakers and multimedia producers are doing through the Civil Rights Cold Case Project, Frank Morris’s case -- like many others -- has been reopened in hopes of uncovering the truth about the crime and offering closure to Morris's family.
Kellie Gentry, a fellow journalism major at UA, and I will each spend six weeks interning with Stanley at the Concordia Sentinel. During our time there, we will be documenting the work he does with a series of multimedia projects, which we hope will show the impact of community and investigative journalism and its role in shedding light on these cases.
We are looking for funding to cover minimal living expenses, as well as better equipment for producing the multimedia projects during our time in Louisiana. Anything over the $800 we raise will go toward improving the quality and expanding the scope of the multimedia work we produce.
We can’t wait to work for Stanley and pitch in on this amazing project however we can. Thank you for helping to make it happen!
