About this project

In 2008, Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia was awarded a matching grant up to $25,000 from The Presser Foundation administered by the Philadelphia Music Project in the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage for a commercial CD release of our 2006 Andrea Clearfield's Golem Psalms and 2007 James Primosch Fire-Memory/River-Memory performances. As it was a matching grant, the project was put on hold until we felt like we could raise the requisite matching funds. As a result of our patience, we now have the opportunity to add the transfixing Jennifer Higdon work On the Death of the Righteous, commissioned and performed by Mendelssohn Club in 2009. We could think of no better validation of the incredible work by our singers and Artistic Director Alan Harler's artistic vision, which has defined Mendelssohn Club for the last 23 years nationally and beyond.

The Alan Harler New Ventures Fund supports the commissioning and premiering of new music to ensure the future of choral music.  Your gift to this fund supports this exceptional commercial CD, scheduled for release in late 2011/early 2012.

Mendelssohn Club has been a champion of new music—commissioning and premiering over forty-seven works in the last twenty-three years. Expanding choral art for over 135 years, Mendelssohn Club continues to build on a rich legacy; as the organization has matured over its lifetime, a natural development of new work has included interdisciplinary and cross-cultural idioms, as in the dance-choral premiere of David Lang’s battle hymns. There is no other choral arts organization in Philadelphia that has such legacy, artistic excellence, and innovative programming. All of this is accomplished by 140 unpaid singers—members of the Philadelphia community that share vision and passion through choral ensemble.
