ISON aims to built an amateur rocket that breaks the internationally recognized edge of space.
Project Description
We're officially dubbing the summer of 2012 the "Summer of Inspiration." With the landing of the Mars Curiosity rover, marking a series of firsts for NASA's planetary sciences program, the launch of the Dragon Capsule by Space X, the first commercial space craft to rendezvous with the International Space Station, the move of NASA's DAWN orbiter from the largest object in the asteroid belt Vesta over to our nearest protoplanet Ceres AND Virgin Galactic taking its final steps towards shuttling civilians to space and back, we've never really lived in a greater age of exploration.
However, deep cuts to our nation's science and space budget and an overall shift in public opinion on the importance of science and doing things that are hard, we've never felt a greater need to reignite the passion and inspire people to dream of tomorrow again.
Funding
Learning, designing, testing and preparing for the largest rocket launch of our lives is no small order. It's not on the scale of launching an Atlas 5, but its much more expensive than some high powered model rockets. Your support will help us take the following steps and acquire the following items:
- 3-4 High powered test rockets to get our Tripoli Rocketry Licensing (so we can start launching the big boys)
- Materials to start modeling and crafting our own prototypes
- The high peered motors required to launch to these high altitudes (custom made)
- High altitude communications equipment
- Recovery devices (parachutes, streamers, etc)
- Go-Pro/Kodak Video cameras to document the entire flight from launch to landing
Goal
We realize this is a very high bar. Our immediate goal is to start launching tests and begin testing our own prototyped designs by summer's end. We're hoping to use this summer to get us to the point where we have our game plan ready to start launching our prototyped rocket and prepare for barrier breaking launches by next year. Additionally, we want to invite as many people as possible to get involved with us. We want to inspire the next generation of explorers and dreamers to take up challenges and do great things.
By pushing ourselves and our boundaries, we're bound to make great discoveries.
