About this project
I work as a staff songwriter for a music publishing company. That means I'm required by contract to write a huge pile of songs every year. That also means that some of them (okay a lot of them) will never see the light of day. Every few years a handful of these songs force their way into the sunlight on one of the recordings I sell from the back of a U-haul trailer as my band travels the rural byways and major highways that argyle our country.
It's time for another of these lyrical adventures.
THE FAMILY
I started touring full time in the Winter of 2003 and something surprising happened along the way. There is a deeply intimate bond formed in the sharing of songs, sharing of meals, sharing times of worship and reflection. We weren't building a fan-base, we were building a family. And with each new recording we've released the family has grown.
Making a new album is also a deeply personal journey for us and this time we want to include you in the process. Instead of just hiding away in writers rooms and recording studios and then UNVEILING a record, we want to partner with you, our extended family in the process of crafting this project.
THE BUDGET
We will again record this project with a bare-bones budget and it will be the simplest, most narrative recording I've ever made. (Honestly, I'm a little nervous about that. No synths and loops to hide behind). We will use Centricity's studio in Washington for free and just use our budget on travel, food, equipment rental, mastering, and manufacturing. I will again produce and engineer the record with the help of friend and band member David Myers. We have set the budget for this project at $4,500.
KICKSTARTER
If you're new to Kickstarter, here's how it works. Friends and family members join us in funding the record by making pledges toward our budget goal of $4500. If we reach our goal in the time allotted we will move forward with the project. If we don't make the financial goal then all of the money is returned and we get nothing. It's a good plan! It keeps you from investing in a half-funded mediocre recording or giving money to a project we can't afford to complete.
In exchange for your financial support we are offering some gifts. Some are practical, some are fun, some are deeply meaningful to me. You can see those listed on the right hand side of the page. So, decide what level of commitment you're willing to make and dive in. Thanks in advance for deciding to get involved in the making of "The Language of Our Hearts."
