What’s a Healing Mob?
For almost a century, tens of thousands of men, women and children came out to watch the lynchings of nearly 5,000 African Americans. Healing Mob 500 is our campaign to create a mob of at least 500 backers who are against dehumanization and violence and willing to face the history of lynching in the U.S. in order to better understand and fight racism and hate today.

Star in our Virtual Flash Mob

You can even get a chance to pick the song everyone will dance to when you back Always in Season at the Pick the Flash Mob Song level (check out the rewards section for more details). We will send you a video with the choreographed dance as one of the Kickstarter project updates at the end of the summer so you can practice and then film yourself or a group of your friends and you performing the flash mob dance routine. (Please ask each member of your group to join Healing Mob 500 as a backer.). You then just need to upload your video (more instructions about this will come in project updates) and we will edit your dance moves into a final video that features the entire Healing Mob 500. A download of the video will be available for you to keep and share with others. Fun, right!

Learn more about Always in Season
Always in Season is a documentary film that tells the story of 3 communities across the U.S. that are facing the multigenerational fallout of lynchings that happened there as relatives of the victims, perpetrators, spectators and others grapple with acknowledging the victims, repairing the damage and reconciling.
Always in Season Island, our 3D virtual world locale in Second Life, will extend an exploration of this history with an experiential look at the crowds of thousands who watched lynchings. As visitors interact via their avatar with a lynch mob and impact the outcome of the violence, they will not only see the choices and circumstances that brought spectators out to watch the violence of the past, but also learn ways to fight racism and hate today.
From the Director: Why this story?
On its surface, the subject of this documentary may seem grim. It's understandable because it appeared that way to me also when I first began researching lynching. But, the faces of the victims kept urging me on to look deeper past the stereotypical images of black men hanging that I thought I knew to see who the victims really were... these more than 4,000 men, women and children who looked like my relatives, friends and neighbors. And, as I began to hold their gaze, I noticed that the spectators in those images by the thousands also looked like my friends and neighbors. In the process of examining how they all came to be a part of such brutally violent events, I have become aware in new ways of the individual and collective responsibility for each other that we all share. Ordinary people from communities across the United States (including relatives of lynching victims, perpetrators, spectators and others) are still dealing with the multigenerational fallout of lynching, and they are coming together despite difficult dialogues to acknowledge the victims, repair the damage, reconcile and actively fight racism and hate today. By supporting Always in Season, you'll make it possible for them to share their inspiring stories with the world, while learning where your own family stories intersect with this intrinsic chapter in American history.

Where will your money go?
We are in early production with our feature-length documentary film, and have created a prototype of our 3D virtual world locale. The narrative of Always in Season was developed across both platforms from the beginning, so there is a lot of overlap with filming, funders, engagement partners and more. After over 3 years of researching this project and beginning production last summer, we are excited to resume production, filming in High Definition for both the film and Second Life locale. The money you donate will go towards filming an essential part of the project storyline taking place in the Atlanta, Georgia area this June-August.
Kickstarter funds will go towards:
• equipment costs,
• fees for our dedicated crew
• and travel expenses
Any surplus beyond our goal will allow us to continue production and film past the summer.
How Kickstarter works:
Your credit card is charged only when we reach our fundraising goal of $15,000 within our deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is ultimately not charged. So, please help us reach our goal. I know we can do it!
I'm readily available for your questions, including for those about navigating the payment setup. Just click on the "Ask A Question" button below and leave me a message.

Our Funders and Community Engagement Partners:
Learn more about Second Life and transmedia storytelling below.
Transmedia is the hot new buzzword for a storytelling approach that weaves together diverse storylines across multiple formats and technologies as parts of an overarching narrative structure. What I love about transmedia production is the ability to engage many different audiences around a story as layered as Always in Season online while bringing some of the same innovative elements of interactivity to the more traditional documentary film.
Always in Season Island is a facilitated, immersive environment developed for various 3D virtual world platforms inlcuding Second Life (SL). With over 25 million members, SL is the largest, most popular multiuser role-playing platform on the internet containing an extensive world where users can both explore and interact via their avatars. More than 700 universities around the world teach courses or conduct research as a part of this online community, and Always in Season Island offers an innovative opportunity for experienced SL users and novices to examine the social climate that made lynchings possible in an unparalleled media rich environment.
Please SPREAD THE WORD about our Kickstarter fundraiser. Your efforts to share our work with others will help make it possible to complete Always in Season and present this story to a broad audience. We are just getting started with production, and your support is so very valuable to moving the project forward.
