A doc that shows the lingering impact of thousands gathering to watch lynchings and Second Life locale that puts you in the crowds.
Hi Everybody! I'm Jackie Olive, writer, producer and director of Always in Season, and I'm Super excited to share this project with you.
Always in Season tells the story of the lingering impact of almost a century of lynching African Americans, and our Second Life locale extends the narrative to take you among the crowds for a personal look at the social climate that made lynchings possible.
Why this story?
On its surface, the subject of our documentary transmedia project may seem grim. It's understandable because it appeared that way to me too when I first began researching lynching. But, the faces of the victims kept urging me on to look deeper past the stereotypical images of black men hanging that I thought I knew to see who the victims really were... these more than 4,000 men, women and children who looked like my relatives, friends and neighbors. And, as I began to hold their gaze, I noticed that the spectaors by the thousands also looked like my friends and neighbors. In the process of examining how they all came to be a part of such brutally violent events, I have become aware in new ways of the individual and collective responsibility for each other that we all share. Ordinary people from communities across the United States (including relatives of the victims, perpetrators and spectators) are still dealing with the multigenerational falllout of lynching, and they are coming together despite difficult dialogues to remember the victims, repair the damage, and actively fight racism and hate. By supporting Always in Season, you'll make it possible for them to share their inspiring stories with the world, while learning where your own family stories intersect with this intrinsic chapter in American history.
Where will your money go?
We have been developing our feature-length film, Always in Season, and our virtual world environment in Second Life called Always in Season Island together from the beginning, so a lot of overlap of story, funders, engagement partners and more exists between these two complimentary platforms. After more than 2 years reserarching the project, we are ready and excited to move fully into production, shooting in High Definition for both the film and Second Life locale. The money you donate will go towards filming two essential parts of the project storyline taking place in London, England and outside of Atlanta, Georgia this July.
Kickstarter funds will go towards:
- equipment costs,
- fees for our dedicated crew
- and travel expenses
Any surplus beyond our goal will allow us to continue production and film past the summer.

Learn more about Second Life and transmedia storytelling below
Transmedia is the hot new buzzword for a storytelling approach that weaves together diverse storylines across multiple formats and technologies as parts of an overarching narrative structure. What I love about transmedia production is the ability to engage many different audiences around a story as layered as Always in Season online while bringing some of the same innovative elements of interactivity to the more traditional documentary film.
Always in Season Island is a facilitated, immersive environment developed for various 3D virtual world platforms inlcuding Second Life (SL). With over 25 million members, SL is the largest, most popular multiuser role-playing platform on the internet containing an extensive world where users can both explore and interact via their avatars. More than 700 universities around the world teach courses or conduct research as a part of this online community, and Always in Season Island offers an innovative opportunity for experienced SL users and novices to examine the social climate that made lynchings possible in an unparalleled media rich environment.
Please SPREAD THE WORD about our Kickstarter fundraiser. Your efforts to share our work with others will help make it possible to complete Always in Season and present this story to a broad audience. We are just getting started with production, and your support is so very valuable to moving the project forward.
