Folk musician Jack Martin has a new sound - Discover the strange and fantastic project that has him writing and recording again.
UPDATE: Our funding goal has been reached? Oops, no question there—our funding goal has been reached! Thanks for your support!!!!!!!
But this is far from over—You can still donate to the project through June 1st—preorder your copy of the new album or pick up a cool reward.
We are heading out to Cape Kiwanda with Lacey the Dog to get started on the recording sessions.
A message from Jack,
Hi gang! There is something being created I want you to be a part of—out on the beautiful Oregon coast I am recording an album I want to end up on your iPod or car stereo.
To reserve your copy or download of the album now—as I am making it—donate to this Kickstarter campaign.
We have 30 days to raise $$ to fund the album creation. Thank you all for your support as we create this project. I hope you love the album.
Want to hear what the album will sound like? Follow the link to download a demo of my song Earthy Man—we recorded this version of the song for the video above, and want you to download the Kickstarter-exclusive song for free.
UPDATE: Sticker update. We (read:Tori) just started working on the first sticker design. Check out the mock-up below!
4 Tips for Making a Killer Album
The process is complicated, but the outline is simple.
1. Surround yourself with brilliant people.
Colin Robson - producer and my new awesome friend
Lacey the Dog - positive vibes
Andrew Theis - artwork, guitar - what a cool dude
Ruth Ginelle - drums - my incredibly hip Booty & The Bandit bandmate
Stephen Branch - bass guitar - long time friend the bass commander
The Weather Machine - Matt, Corey, Slater and Colin - cello, drums and guitars - my bandmates and brothers
Headband All Stars - past and present members of the a cappella group that gifted me an unhealthy obsession with harmony
Laura Curtis, Jeremy Murphy, Travis Ehrenstrom, friends from Oregon - vocals and who knows what else - my community/gang/compadres
Tori, Colin, Slater, Ruth and Andrew - they help me with a lot of stuff. I could not do this without them
2. Dream big.
Step two is to dream big. Which is easy for me. I am a dreamer.
The Album Dream
As I began to write these songs, the dream became: create an album that creates something itself—the story of how I see the world set to music.
The songs have started to naturally fall into place; Breaking Your Heart leads into House of Cards in a way that feels great—Sailing Into, an old instrumental tune, became the missing piece of the new tune Long Present Past.
The vision is clear, and now we are just using all the tools at our disposal (amazing friends and musicians and our combined creativity) to make it all happen.
3. Write great music.
Breaking Your Heart - "How can I keep from breaking your heart? The second I don't care, I know that you're going to start. How can I keep from breaking your heart?" Check out a recording here.
Earthy Man - This song was inspired by a bar of soap. Yeah. No joke. The Earthy Man soap from Sister's La Petite Savonnerie was given to me as a gift and it magically increased my connection and perception of nature. I had to write a song about it. Listen or download a demo here.
House of Cards - On a lazy afternoon touring Cobh in Ireland, the scenery was inspiring. House of Cards—the escape ballad—was born there through a series of text messages I sent to myself while wandering the city. It was a pay-as-you-go phone, ten cents per message, so it cost me about $3.50 to write the song, but I think it was worth it. Listen to my band Booty & The Bandit's version here.
All of those demos are available for listening and free downloads by following those links. Please let me know what you think!
4. Give the people what they want.
The people I love (read:YOU) can get involved. I am playing shows around the Northwest this summer, so find a show near you.
At the end of summer I will release the new record and host a few release parties. If you want to reserve your copy of the album now, you can back this project.
Backing the project means rewards—things you have been asking for—we are making them. Stickers, album posters, and the infamous trucker hats. Some extra special stuff like bonus discs and personalized something-or-others too.
And yes there is one extra special reward coming in the next week that one lucky supporter might walk home with.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The most unexpected part of being a musician is how much non-musical business there is to take care of. This Kickstarter project will help handle much of that business.
The four most expensive aspects of making this album are (in order):
1. studio recording time,
2. pressing physical CDs,
3. mixing and mastering songs,
4. paying session musicians.
We are overcoming this challenge with your help—finding the most cost-efficient way to record and produce the album, and spending countless hours ensuring that the whole process is planned and executed.
The best part about all of this is: I know we can do it.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
