Flush is tale about a bulimic wrestler and an ethically-motivated anorexic girl who fall in love and become pregnant.
Flush is about two young lovers who meet in the confinement of a juvenile treatment center.
Jacob is a high school wrestler who struggles to make weight because of his love for food and alcohol. He turns to bulimia in order to keep his bad habits while continuing to wrestle at his weight class. When his mother finds out, he is sent off to the Felicity Treatment Center, a corporate chain of facilities that push their sister-company's mood enhancing drugs.
In the Felicity Treatment Center, Jacob meets Ana, a frail and beautiful anorexic girl, who is on a permanent hunger strike against the entire world's problems. Jacob's shallow worldview is shaken open by Ana's deep understanding of the plights of the earth. She wants to show Jacob that there is a better way than consuming everything in sight.
Jacob, despite his love and respect for Ana, has trouble communicating and expressing his emotions, and because of his self-centered focus on his wrestling and alcohol, fails to support Ana when she most needs it, when she realizes she's pregnant.
Like most writers, I spent several years developing my writing technique working against the self-doubt and the loathing and all the other things that go into being a creator. So far I've learned to deal with the aspects of the painful yet euphoric process of creating, enough to finish a novel and continue writing a second one.
I heeded the advice of other writers and realized that I wanted to create the book that I would love to read.
So I considered these things while writing Flush:
-I like characters more than plot. The depths of the human character intrigue me, so I made my characters rich and complex. I wanted to connect this depth of the human psyche to reader in smooth and natural way.
-I like philosophical and psychological concepts but really dislike jargon (unless used for effect) and over-complicated explanations. I like things simple and deep. As humans and readers, we are emotionally drawn into matters of the human condition, but who wants to read all that psychological/philosophical mumbo-jumbo except for psychologists and philosophers?
-I really love language though I've struggled with it in the past. My passion lead me to a degree in Linguistics which really helped me with writing and also how to be a better reader. I can't help myself but to analyze all forms of language that pass my way. My obsession with the dictionary knows no bounds. Words are their own stories, and I keep this in mind when writing.
Flush is my first solo novel which I finished just over a year ago and have decided to self-publish. I still need a professional proofread then it's ready to publish via Createspace. I would also like to have an author's website created to further promote this novel and my next novel (soon to be finished).
-Print promotional bookmarks and postcards
-Print 200 or more hard copies for promotion and donor rewards
-Hold one or two book-signings at Milwaukee venues where I give away 25 signed novels at each event then possibly branch through the state and region
-Any remaining books will be used for additional book-signings
By launching this project with Kickstarter, I will break into a career as a novelist.
I am currently finishing my second novel - Dipso. I blogged a very rough draft of the first seven chapters and excerpts of some of my methods of creation.
You can find the blog here: dipsonovel.wordpress.com
I would like to thank three friends: Daniel Warschkow for creative inspiration, cover art, and editing, Christophor Rick for helping me with the Kickstarter video, and Eric Knaak for support and introducing me to Kickstarter.
And I thank all of you for your time and support!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
