Update #6: Mish-Mash: A project update, why you should still donate, and my other comics!

Posted on December 1, 2009

I want Poorcraft to get to a $10,000 total.
That money wouldn't be for diamond stickpins and solid gold underpants. This is gonna sound weird, but: the more money Poorcraft makes in the pledge period, the more copies I'll be able to afford to give away for free.
If and when Poorcraft reaches ten thousand dollars pledged, I want to earmark between fifty and one hundred copies to be given to organizations YOU guys recommend and suggest. Ashrams, communes, churches, after-school clubs, kibbutzim, scout troops, middle schools, trade schools, art schools, and anyone else who might have 'em. I am serious about wanting this book to get as wide an audience as possible. I am CRAZY like that for REAL.

One hundred books is one thousand dollars' worth of books, in terms of the cover price. How convenient! So guys, this is official: Consider the amount I collect between now and the $10,000 goal dedicated to book giveaways. Spread the word, please! Blog, tweet, tell your friends, post it to any relevant lists or forums you might already belong to. I really want to do this.

Other reasons you should still donate:

- Pledging is STILL the cheapest chance you will ever have to buy a copy of Poorcraft. No taxes, no shipping. And they'll come signed! Even the PDF of Poorcraft will go up in price when the book is published.

- Diana Nock will be living off of what I'm paying her to draw Poorcraft. The more I can give her beforehand... which will be half of the pledged total... The more exclusive she can be, and the more quickly the book will be finished.

- It would be a cool thing to do.
So... yeah, there you have it. Boy, I hope that's motivating.

In totally unrelated news: I just began my yearly Christmas sale! Before I ever thought to do Poorcraft, I was writing and drawing a comic called Templar, Arizona. It's a slice-of-life alternate-history comic, about a strange and different Arizona full of strange and different people. Cultists, anachronists, communists, killers, writers, smut peddlers and drifters. It's a lot of fun, and whenever I finish a chapter online, I edit it, tweak the art, add footnotes and unpublished sketches, and print it up. Those books... And there are currently three... Are available here.

If you like to try before you buy, you can read the whole comic, including the currently-unpublished 4th chapter, starting here. If you order by the tenth, I'm guaranteeing pre-Christmas delivery!

Thanks, everybody!

I would like to suggest at least one copy go to the New York Public Library. I'm pretty sure it's the largest public library system in the US. www. nypl.org

send one to the Bellingham alternative library, this is right up their alley. all of their books are either comic books or books on hippy/alternative/cheep living. I think the rest of the house that the library is in is a co-op housing thing, anyway, they'd love poorcraft.

their website is ( http://sushitree.org/library.php ) I think the didn't list the whole address which would be :
      The Bellingham Alternative Library
      717 N Forest St
      Bellingham, WA 98225

it is so cool of you guys to do this.

As an extension of David Schwartz's idea, perhaps you could also seek out poor communities in other countries? For the initial offering, you may have to stick to places where English is at least a dominant language, but if this thing takes off as well as I'm expecting it to, perhaps you could use revenues from sales to finance translations, so other communities can also use this book?

In any case, I'm going to donate one of my copies (at least) to my local library.

      :D
