Journey into the heart of South America. Connect to a forgotten past and witness a new tomorrow in the making.
ABOUT THE FILM
AFRO URUGUAY: FORWARD TOGETHER is a documentary film, in production, about the little-known history and contemporary experience of afrodescendientes (people of African descent) in Uruguay.
Ten percent of the Uruguayan population is of African descent. And yet, Afro Uruguayans have too often been invisible, their lives marginalized, their stories undertold. We embarked on this project to help change that and to bring greater awareness of Afro Latino cultures throughout the Americas.
A rich culture and unique musical tradition bring this story of the people, their history and contemporary experience to life. Told by the people themselves, the story unfolds in the modern era, takes us back in time, and explores the interconnections of the black experience throughout the Americas.

YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION SUPPORTS INDEPENDENT MEDIA
This is an entirely independent production. Without the backing of a major studio we have the freedom to pursue the story that needs to be told. Every dollar you donate goes directly to support bringing this important and timely film to the screen to be shared within Uruguay, the United States, throughout the Americas, and beyond.
Iris Films is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization and your donation to AFRO URUGUAY: FORWARD TOGETHER is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
The funds you give will go towards production equipment (see our wish list here) and the cost of working production in Uruguay for nine months of intensive on the ground research, development and video shooting.
Please join us in bringing an undertold history and hidden culture to the world!
There are many ways to support the project. While each dollar matters, equally important is the community of friends and supporters who share the journey of developing this film. We hope that this project and its unfolding story has captured your attention and imagination as it has ours.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This is an unfolding story. It is entirely unscripted and we will catch the action as it develops while we are on the ground in Uruguay for nine months.
We will be following two Afro Uruguayan cultural leaders, Sergio Ortuño and Elizabeth Suarez. They are both deeply engaged in the world of candombe and are also tireless advocates for the rights of people of African descent.
But, in truth, (and this is one of the most exciting things about documentary) we don't know exactly how long the story we will want to follow will take to unfold. Nor do we have total funding in place right now to follow that story. Our core, committed production team is seasoned in all aspect of production and post production. And regardless of funding, we are working hard to make sure that the film is finished by the end of 2014 - but we cannot guarantee that. We will keep you posted on our progress.
We invite you to follow (and comment on) our progress through our production blog. We will be sharing the nitty gritty of the process - the challenges and the triumphs. Access the AFRO URUGUAY production blog through the link and QR code above, and get a behind-the-scenes look at this unfolding, uncharted drama.

Yes. Kickstarter requires Amazon. We encourage our supporters to do what is most comfortable for them. We hope that Amazon is not a deal breaker for you. We need all of our pledges to be made through the Kickstarter system (which requires the use of Amazon) to meet the $15,000 mark in order to win this campaign. With Kickstarter, it's ALL OR NOTHING.
If you feel strongly that you absolutely cannot give through Amazon, please consider a direct donation to us, which will not be counted as a part of the Kickstarter campaign: http://bit.ly/IrisDonate
In any case, your contribution is tax-deductible and will be put to good use in service of this project.
