Without Further Ado...
We are very proud to provide the first gameplay video of Wasteland 2, which will allow our backers to see how far we've come and how everything is coming together. The usual way of doing things in this industry would see us create a demo specifically for displaying to the press or at game shows, but we're very glad to have been allowed the freedom to create a demo video from an actually playable area, which ensures there's no wasted code. This is a straight video capture of Development Director Chris Keenan playing the game. The only element that is not running in code is the sound effects, as it was faster to do in post, but as you will hear, there is nothing being done audio wise that isn't easily replicated in engine. In fact, we plan to have many more sound effects in the final game than what is heard here.
Wasteland 2 - Early Gameplay Footage
This represents not just the strong synergy of the inXile team but the effects of your continued input via the forums. The game has continued to improve thanks to this communication, and Wasteland 2 will be better for it. The benefits have ranged from changes to the combat mechanics to finalizing the name of our attribute system.
It also represents the success of working with Unity and the asset creation experiment we did to increase the variety and density of the world look. We were pleasantly surprised at the talent that submitted art content, and we look forward to continuing to work with them.
I’d also like to thank the military personnel who joined our Yammer group to help us develop the slang and communicate more real world experiences for us to draw on. We love to learn little things like how much they hate it when movies say “Over and out!”… There is no “out” after “over” dammit!
This first level you will see is one of the first areas you will encounter in the game. The agricultural center was also a part of Wasteland 1. It was an area that Chris Avellone had some affinity for and he did the design for the level. Also thanks goes out to Nathan Long, who provided this area’s clever writing. We had a chance to show Chris the level last week, and when we commented that it was coming together he said “not coming together … it has COME together.”
Our objective was to show off some of the HUD and how both the combat and skill systems work. There are many elements not represented here but to name a few:
- Minimal particle effects
- Minimal sound
- Mini-map not working
- Inventory, logbook and other character screens not shown
- Not all skills (in and out of combat) being represented
- No world map movement
- It needs more messaging in the UI
- And not a comprehensive list of all the combat variables
Sorry if we're over communicating, but it's just a reminder: we're just past the halfway mark, so don't expect to see everything that you can expect from the final game just quite yet.
You will get to listen to the latest track from Mark Morgan (at the bottom of this update) that sets the haunting and often desolate tone of the Wasteland. And you will hear our first pass at the radio broadcasting which plays a vital role in communication, reactivity and mood setting. There will be a host of cults who are broadcasting their propaganda while other calls will be the locals who seek the help of our rangers. We have many interesting ideas on how to use the radio in novel ways.
Our vision for this game remains intact and you will see a number of examples that illustrate this. The customization can be seen in the examples of bringing in your own portraits and by the ability to set the user interface in a style that works for you.
You wanted a party and turn based RPG with tactical combat, and we are delivering that. The demo helps to show off action points, use of cover, enemy view cones, distance/height/enemy size/enemy speed affecting the chance to hit, ammo configurations, attributes changing the characters strengths and role, simultaneous party firing and more. And we are not done adding elements to make sure you are fully engaged in an interesting combat system. There is still plenty of time for you to comment on the combat system and to help us hone it in. Our goal is to build a very deep combat system, with the potential to dive in and fine-tune your damage-output and tactics, while not absolutely requiring that level of micro-management from all players.
If you played Wasteland 1, you will enjoy the many callbacks to the original, but at the same time there is no need of that knowledge. While certainly not a comedy you will get a healthy dose of the humor that gave Wasteland its charm.
Once again we thank you all for backing our vision…

Some thoughts:
+ Environment - Eerie, tension filled, and awesome.
+ Dialogue - Mature (profanity where it makes sense) and interesting.
- Weapon Images - I agree that the green dots are not the best. I'd rather see the weapon, or a shadowdy version of it instead.
- Keywords - Can you PLEASE!!! highlight (via different color) usable keywords within dialogue. I am not a detective and I don't want to have to spend 30 min at each dialogue prompt looking for secret keywords. I like how keywords on the left can come and go, but hate the "secret" keywords in the dialogue itself.
Creator Jan Blažíček on February 9
Allright, looking good. There are a few things that bother me though:
- Keyword based replies bother me A LOT. I don't want the NPC guys to be the only ones with clever replies. The dialog, which is exceptionaly written is alpha and omega of every great RPG, at least for me. This way, it just seems broken.
- Loading of text in the UI box line by line. It's a nice effect, but as the game is so heavily text based, it will just slow down the reading of the text heavily. I mean, it's almost impossible to read the text until it entirely loads as it stands. If you have to use some effect, a simple fast fade would look better. Or no effect at all.
- Custom skill bars for each character would help as others suggested.
- The UI alltogether looks a bit too obtrusive. I'd honestly vote for a bit more minimalistic look, smaller windows and ditching the "glass" around the skills as it looks out of place. That would provide space for a bigger text window as well.
- The last thing I want to complain about, and this may not ring well with the others, is the battle system. I don't mind what I've seen at all, but I guess I was hoping for some sort of VATS. I know you guys don't want to turn this into Fallout, but this single feature made Fallout extremely tactical game even without the features you have shown. I love being able to cripple one guys leg or make a mob drop his weapon and move on to fight someone else in meantime.
There are a few other things bothering me a little bit such as a tad too close camera, too obtrusive highlighting of loot and objects and so on, but I can live with all of those. Just so I am not too negativistic:
- The writing is great, just for this I would play the heck out of it even with the above mentioned issues.
- The music is absolutely awesome and brings back a lot of memories.
- The graphics overall are better than I expected (Although honestly I didn't expect much, modern 3D graphics in games such as these simply tend to look a bit too catroony for my liking. I miss the "almost pixel art" graphics...)
- Smart camera
Overall, you guys get a C+ from me (Which is an awesome grade as far as both me and my university are concerned, so keep it up :) ). In any case, thanks!

Creator nils on February 9
I really like how this is coming along, thanks guys.
Creator PonSquared on February 9
I have to say, and I really mean this.... I could not be happier about where the game is, and where it is going. The demo looked fantastic - better than I could have ever imagined. You made the game I have so desperately been wanting to play for years and years. My money was well spent, indeed. I can't wait to play it. <3

Look great i knew i had backed a great team
Creator Kim Fredrik Svendsen on February 9
Amazing!! I knew it would be good, but the graphics and lights are just way better then I had dared to estimate regarding the tight budget. So much graphical details all arround, makes me want to explore and click on everything. I watched it again to read all the dialog text. Absolutely awesome. Also the combat system looks to be great and fun gameplay. Totally psyced, great great work guys!! And thanks for making a long video. :)
Creator Scott Hannah on February 9
This looks amazing! Excitement *10!
Creator Benjamin Ahronheim on February 9
When I put my money in the pot, this was *exactly* the game I was hoping would result! Keep heading in this direction and I'll end up one very happy backer!
Creator Tim on February 9
I wish I could see the weapon art on the UI. I hate the Fallout 3 style glowing green outline for the weapon.
Creator Jaesun - WeresheepSerpent of Sin on February 9
That looks so damn awesome! Great job inXile!
Creator Welks on February 9
This looks absolutely phenomenal, but to be honest, two things have concerned me:
-First, I hope that UI is not definitive, because it is too flat and in my opinion needs more work. This is really a minor concern, because as long as the game is good I don't care about the interface, but it would be good if it were less harsh to the eye.
-Second, and most important, the keyword dialog system. I don't know if that is inheritance from the original Wasteland but in my opinion, being only able to community via specific words harms the atmosphere. It really could be interesting being able to unlock specific dialogs by writing something on the chatbox as Fallout did, but sacrificing the whole traditional dialog system in doing so seems like a bad call to me.
Creator Donald M Pollack on February 9
Very please with what I am seeing! I think wasteland and fallout fans are getting what we wanted. I understand the work in progress of this video.
I like the custom GUI. Environments look pretty good and the enemies brought a smile. Descriptive text... Yes! Only note beside it being great, for important environmental notes can there be color floating text appear over the object? With a record of it in the dialogue box?
Dislike, glory sparkles over loot... Please, reminds me to much of wow or diablo. I would suggest glowing outline that is green or blue.
Creator Sean on February 9
Amazing work! Keep it up. Glad to see all the hard work put into the game.
Creator mcasteelen on February 9
Exceeded my expectations by far! Excellent work, keep it up! Finally a true hardcore turn-based action rpg in a post apocalyptic environment that needs a IQ higher then 80 to play. Thank you all for saving the game industry from becoming retarded due to dumbing down policies to improve sales figures...
I've only got one small suggestion, the picture of the weapons, could they be like in fallout 1 and 2, instead of a digital green dot representation? This gives more connection to the weapon, like the bozar in fallout 2, in-game it looked like the flamethrower, but the picture in the action bar made it feel real and awesome.
Creator T.J. Brumfield on February 9
@Alexander von Gluck - No one has binaries yet because the game isn't finished. There will be a Linux release when there is a release of the game. Just wait.
Creator David Pierron on February 9
Whoowhoo ! I love this game already ! I'm so happy to have backed you up guys, keep up the good work !
Creator Sal "Lasareath" Cameli on February 9
Just one Question: Will I be able to adjust the GUI to fit my 21:9 Monitor?
Creator Marius Smit on February 9
Thanks for the update. Looks very promising. While I love the descriptive text I do find that it the placement of the box and the typewriter sound had me looking back and forth between the gameplay area and the textbox all the time. Now I know that you can move the text box, but you might want to consider prompting the player with less text or integrating it more smoothly, because someone like myself would be obsessed with reading every bit of text and constantly moving my eyes back and forth to read the text and watch the units had a somewhat nauseating effect.
Creator Pavel Stangel on February 9
I love everything I see except the dialogue....I was hoping for a proper dialogue trees with full sentences.
I suspect I will still love the game, but still a bit of dissapointment - this keyword style remind me of Morrowind, which I disliked quite a bit.
All the other elements look great though. I do not regret kickstarting Wasteland 2 at all.
Creator Bachtiar Rahady on February 9
Watching the video really scares me! The gameplay, the environment, multiple ways to solve problems and those detailed scrolling descriptions. Wow..
"Nothing is easy and no one is safe. Because this is Wasteland" written all over the place.
Creator d32 on February 9
I am in love with this game.
Thanks for doing it.

Just watched the Video!!!
WOW WOW WOW WOW
AWESOME!!!!
CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THIS GAME!!!!
GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!
Creator Barış Korkut on February 9
Congrats for the impressive progress!
A few humble opinions:
- Skill bar layouts could be custom for the selected character. And another single custom one when multiple charaters are selected.
- GUI takes large space on screen. Might come in various sizes?
- Keyword based dialouge selection is nice but it would be nicer if we saw an actual snetence as our answer after selecting the keyword.
Creator Dennis Skyum on February 9
I am so happy I backed this project.
Creator El Duderino-Abider of the Obsidian Order on February 9
It's awesome.
For dialogue I like the fact that you can search for words and etc, but would be nice to see more reactivity. I mean, you talk about a subject, but you just select the subject. It doesn't seem to have an option for your char to talk good or bad about something, as if there's no opinion.
Creator James Baker on February 9
Watched the playthrough. It looks amazing, great work guys
Creator Dustin_00 on February 9
Looks beautiful. Keep moving forward!
Creator Alexander von Gluck on February 9
Sooooooo... where is the Linux binaries? No Linux means I wasted my kickstarter $$$'s.
Creator Deudanann on February 9
Bah, can't edit comments: Is he saying "meow" instead of "now" in the video?
Creator Deudanann on February 9
Can we join up with the synthetic guys? Or at least acquire the tech the lead robot guy is using (after we kill him, he seems like an ass). Becoming a robot would be awesome.
Creator Marios Damoulianos on February 9
LIKE:
- All visuals (characters, world, GUI)
- Sound (Mark Morgan rules again)
- Turn based combat
- Text based dialogue
- Skill usage system
- Smart camera implementation (walls/pillars going transparent as needed)
DON"T LIKE:
- Keywords based dialogue (oh no!! subtracts so much from the "feel" Where are the witty replies!!!!!!!!)
- Keywords based dialogue (for good measure. -This is a MAJOR disappointment for me.)
- Slow death animations (not realistic -currently I find them rather cheesy)
- Camera too close to the ground (I'd like a choice to zoom-out a little bit)
- White line effect when a weapon is fired is too obtrusive.
Creator JackDandy on February 9
This looks freaking great! I had my doubt about InXile, I thought frankly Fargo was just an overly-excited has-been.
But this video has REALLY proved me wrong. InXile knows what it's doing.
It's EXACTLY what I wanted from this game! The keyword system is just like in Ultima, too, which is neat. The combat looks really interesting, I like the whole cone-of-vision thing that helps you set up ambushes and such.
Keep up the good work! I want to play this already!
Creator Joachim on February 9
This video shows exactly what I had hoped for. Thank you!!!!
One idea: it would be great if the team meber with the best skill solving something would be highligted when you eg try to open a door. This woudl reflect the "Hey, I can open/break that!". And it would allow team mmebers that coudl do something better, but dont want to, so they are not highlighted then.
Creator Tyler Funk on February 9
Wow. This is looking very good! Can't wait to get my hands on this!
Creator Patrick Calkins on February 9
Put me on the pile of complaints about the UI being too big, covering up too much of the screen. Will this UI be user modifiable at all? Will players be able to scale the size of the elements you can move about screen?
Personally, I would like to see the UI elements on the screen a bit smaller. I don't know if the PC dialogue is fleshed out yet, but it only looked like to me you get "Key words" to type and click on. I think I can speak for others I really want to know what my PC is saying, opposed to just a one word reply or a topic to bring up. Not to impressed with that so far, but overall I'm liking the combat and how characters interface with the world. No lame "Do this mini game!!!!11" to unlock a door or a safe.
So far, so good. From what I've seen, the game could use some tweaks in my opinion.
Creator Andrew Triebe on February 9
OMG Not only does this look awesome, but the music is epic! O.O I can't wait for this to come out now!
Creator David Khono Hackland on February 9
I'd like to see more choice in combat. For example, the ranger who was tanking that bandit was behind cover and shooting. I'd love to have the ability to set his method of taking cover. That is, with options such as "normal" which would have him choosing a position using the cover decently but also leaving him/her with excellent ability to attack. Cowardly where the ranger cowers behind the cover, only popping out briefly to take a shot which's unlikely to hit, but keeping the ranger deeply in the cover. The other obvious position being aggressive where the ranger focuses entire on doing damage and not worrying about keeping everything within cover.
I think it would also add great depth to get messages in the UI indicating why a shot missed, such as if it was on target but hit the cover; if the burst fire missed due to muzzle climb; if the shot hit but hit at such an angle that it was deflected by the ranger helmet that was converted from a cast-iron skillet. I feel this kind of depth would add an immersive quality that most games have been lacking lately. Maybe you're doing it already but just in case you're not, there are my two cents. :)
Creator Florian Kretzschmar on February 9
This looks awesome. I can't wait to see more of it!
Creator That One Guy on February 9
Looks beautiful! I really love the text descriptions; it gives it a very pen-and-paper feel.
My only constructive feedback would be that it seems odd to me that you can have a gun battle two hundred feet away from a guy and he doesn't realize it. Not sure if it's possible to change that in terms of game balance, but it would be cool if firing rounds when fighting the bugs put the guard into alert/patrol mode or something. Gunshots are darn loud things.
Creator StranaMente on February 9
The game is coming out brilliant, and I'm very glad of the progress made. I love the descriptions and I'm very glad that this game is text based to grant more flexibility.
I join the others who complained about the UI, though, because it looks tto big, and obscures much of what happens on the screen.
For the dialog options, I understand the reasons to keep regional and specific topic separated, but I wonder if it would change much to group them together and put it in the dialogue window, under the text.
The music is very good too, Morgan did a great work.
Creator Toke on February 9
This game is going to be amazing! Loved the gameplay demo, the UI is great, the combat system looks perfect, the graphics are cool, the music is nice and atmospheric and reminiscent of the old Fallout games. Wonderful stuff :)
Creator Fredrik Sivertsson on February 9
Wow, if this was all it was... I'd still be buying it.
Creator Nelson Tavares on February 9
Personally am happy to see the comeback of keywords in dialog. It's not like they're required for quest progression, but their use prompts me to think about the world and its characters more than I would normally.
Creator Matthias Rolf on February 9
Fantastic job so far. I like almost everything I saw and I'm fairly certain the rest is just due to being a game in development, not a finished product.
The only thing I'd like to say:
There was a room where the UI info text said something about it being very tidy, but visually, it was just as dirty as the rest of the building. Very small thing and I do understand you're building a fairly huge game, but small touches like that can lift a scene from "good" to "fantastic".
Creator Mike Brown on February 9
Simply Awesome, I cannot wait
Creator Jim Reader on February 9
Very happy, very impressed, thank you folks for your hard work and respect for the original.
Creator Rob Crane on February 9
Wow.Looking good,nay,great..it looks exactly like I imagined it would, but way better....This just made my day...
Creator KarolD on February 9
Good work !
I think the UI needs a bit more polishing. I'm also not to fond of the keyword based dialog - a written question/response would make player characters more believable. Keyword based system makes it look like there is no depth to the rangers.
Creator Svetlin Balcanski on February 9
I have not enough words to say how amazing Wasteland 2 looks after watching the video, just a stupid happy smile on my face!
