Unbelievably, the first week of our trip is already almost over. So far we've had one big problem and many successes.

As our starting date is right around the corner, we are ironing out week two of our trip. We'll be leaving the Carolinas for the beautiful state of Tennessee. We are a little ambitious about Tennessee, and we hope to see a variety of museums and schools including the Museum of Appalachia the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

We then head down to Georgia to see two of the most famous works done by Outsider artists. Howard Finster's Paradise Gardens began in 1961 and has become a maze of structures and sculptures that incorporate all kinds of recycled materials. The Pasaquan Preservation Society showcases the work of Eddie Owens Martin whose work transformed him into St. EOM's PASAQUAN. While we are in Georgia we will also be visiting Slotin Folk Art, who host one of the world’s largest folk art shows. We will sadly be missing their festival, but hopefully we will be able to see some of their collection.

Then as we headed through Mississippi and Alabama, we will be stopping at the Ave Maria Grotto, the lifetime work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Bendendictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Some places and people we would love to visit in Alabama are the The Gee's Bend Quilters Collective and Marcia Weber Art Objects, both who specialize in one-of-a-kind artworks.

An unusual stop in Alabama we are taking is the Unclaimed Baggage Center. A phenomenon in itself, the vast majority of the items it sells are from unclaimed baggage which, after at least 90 days of intensive tracking by the airlines, are declared unclaimed.

After the South, we arrive in Texas! Starting off in Houston, we will be stopping at the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. In addition, hopefully we will be able to work with Workshop Houston.

Then as week two winds down, we will be able to catch the last performance of Grrl Action, a program of Rude Mechanicals, that began in 1999 as a summer workshop in creative writing and performance designed to empower girls between the ages of 13 and 16 to find their public voices and build confidence while collaborating with young women from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

Our first week's itinerary is getting pretty clear. We're going to Baltimore first, starting off with a few meetings wit the people at Art on Purpose and a visit to the American Visionary Art Museum. We also have dreams to meet up with Wham City before Whartscape begins...

Then We'll be in D.C. at the Smithsonian for a day, heading straight down to virginia afterwards to check out Foamhenge and Dinosaur Adventures.

When we get to the Carolinas we hope to camp on the outer banks for a day... and see tons of outsider art sites: Vollis Simpson's Whirligigs, Henry Warren's Shangri-La, Clyde Jones' Critter Crossing, and more. We also hope to check out the SC State Museum, the Gregg Art Museum, and Davidson College's collection of paintings by Rev. McKendree Robbins Long and Benjamin Old Folk Davis.

By the weekend of the 17th we'll be at Hub-Bub for our bookmaking workshop!
First week done.

We can't thank you all enough for contributing to the project. We're making unbelievable progress and it's making us that much more excited to get on the road in only a few short weeks. Today we did a site visit at the Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY, where we hope to end our trip. The Wassaic Project Summer Festival coincides with the last leg of our journey, and today we were able to speak with Eve Biddle, who runs the project, about possible options for site-specific installation during the festival. The place has an absolutely beautiful sprawling barn and a 7-story renovated grain factory to use as exhibition space. Early ideas include doing some silkscreen demos out of the back of our car and playing sound recordings from Alisa's amp in the trunk. More information to come as our proposal coalesces.
