Kids, Do Your Homework
What do you do when you have 4 minutes to get the shot? You make sure you know what you're going to get by calculating all the angles and checking them twice. Surprisingly, this often requires some thorough analysis in photography.
What do we know about this rare eclipse? NASA tells us its going to be 5 degrees above the horizon in the location we're going to be. That's pretty low right? Nearly flat. Perfect for shooting a model in front of it!
Ah, but not really.
We use some high school trigonometry to determine that if the model is some 600 feet away (why so far?? Find out here!), at 5 degrees the eclipse will actually be 50 feet over her head! Holy Sol batman! That's nowhere near her. (Refer to detailed diagram below)
If you want the model in front of the eclipse, how do you fix that? Get a 50' ladder? Well, we've done some advance research on the general region we want to be in and have determined that the ground, though relatively flat, does have natural swells well in excess of the height we need. That will be part of our location scouting the day before for the perfect spot that puts Lisa at the right height relative to the camera in order to get her level with the eclipse when it happens.
Exciting stuff. And an important illustration (literally and figuratively) that doing your homework and paying attention in trigonometry class can even be helpful in artsy fields like photography.
